BC Win U19 National Championship with 4-0 Record: Claim Title with 31-10 Victory Over Wolf Pack

posted July 19 2016
[ed. comments below]

BC is still dominant in the U19 age category claiming their 4th title in 5 years, the only break in that reign was 2014 when Ontario won the title.

BC got stronger as the tournament progressed, they struggled against winless Voyageurs in their first match but finished off with a srong 31-10 win over Wolf Pack who had put 100+ points on the two east coast teams earlier in the tournament.

Tries for BC today were by Callum Botchar, Elias Ergas, Connor Sampson, Jake Thiel with Ben Scher claiming 3 penalties and a conversion.

Top point scorer in the tournament was Robert Povey from the UK who played for the Wolf Pack. He was Canada's U20 flyhalf this year and slotted a tournament high 13 conversions to add to 3 penalties and 2 tries. Top try scorer was Avery Oitomen from Ontario with 5. Top try scorer for BC was Elias Ergas with 3.

BC had a number of talented players this year, two to watch are Ben Scher who is currently listed as Durham University but went to St. George's and is an accomplished 7s player as well, representing BC when they won the Vegas 7s U19. He was on the Canada U18 team that toured Ireland this year. Also on that Ireland U18 tour was Jake Thiel the big #8 from Abbotsford, it's been a while since Canada has had a dominant #8 and Jake looks like he has the potential to fill that role in the future.

Well done to players and coaching staff on the BC U19 team.

BC U19 Men One Win Away from Title After Today's Victory Over Rock

posted July 17 2016

It was close in the first half with the Rock leading with minutes left in the half. It was big Jake Thiel playing #8 who rumbled in just before half to tie it up at 12. It was all BC in the second half as they ended the match ahead 36-15. BC have a day's rest before taking on the Wolf Pack on Tuesday. The Wolf Pack opened the tournament with a narrow loss to Ontario before devouring the Rock by 55 points yesterday. They face the Voyageurs tomorrow.

BC U19 with Big Win Over Ontario; U20 Women Lose to Nova Scotia

The BC U19 men's team are the flagship program for the BCRU this week with the U16, U17, U18 teams getting tuned up by the Americans and the U20 women losing all their games to date.

It was a tenacious win for the men's U19 with the scrum creaking but not capitulating while the lineout completely fell apart, even gifting Ontario a try. The win was a testament to the strong work in the loose play and the accurate boot of Liam Mahon. The Rugby Canada report states, "Ben Scher had the lone try for BC while Liam Mahon had four penalties and a conversion. Will Kelly contributed all 10 of Ontario’s points." BC are the only undefeated side and need to get by the Rock tomorrow and Wolf Pack on Tuesday. The Wolf Pack put up a surprising score on the Rock 62-7 after losing their opening match to Ontario.

The woes continue for the women U20, now officially ranked below Nova Scotia after losing to NS 17-10. It's time for BC to take a serious look at its U20 women's development programs.

Day 2 Results: BC U19 Men Escape with Close Win Over Quebec; U20 Women Lose to Wolf Pack

posted July 15 2016
[ed. comments below]

It wasn't the start the BC U19 men would have wanted, it's a win but it was a very narrow win against a team that was easily handled by the Rock on Day 1 36-7. BC's last try to seal the victory would fall into the "very fortuitous" category stealing a kickoff to go straight in for a try. The grunt work by the forwards and the consequent rewards was all done by the Voyageurs. Games are normally determined by the forwards and the BC forwards were outplayed today. The final score was 23-15, 3 tries apiece. The challenge is greater tomorrow as BC take on Ontario who will have a very physical forward pack. The high winds made it difficult for both teams, the refereeing was tragic which didn't help continuity but BC will have to up its game tomorrow to contend for the title this year.

For the women it was more of the same as they were defeated 29-12 by the Wolf Pack. The good news is they started to find some form later in the game to keep the scoreline close. They face Nova Scotia tomorrow to determine 3rd/4th place in pool play.

Day 1 Results: BC U20 Women Lose 60-5 to Ontario: U19 Men Start Tomorrow

posted July 14 2015

It's been a tough few days for the BC age-grade teams, the bright spot may be the men's U19 program which starts tomorrow under the capable guidance of UBC coach Curry Hitchborn.

The women's U20 team were blasted by Ontario who look to be the class of the field again this year. Ontario had 10 individual try scorers in the 60-5 victory. Analyzing why the disparity in playing levels leads to appreciating the role that CIS University rugby plays in this age level development. Of the 11 scorers for Ontario (10 tries, 3 conversions), 7 are from CIS University programs, 1 was a Canada U18 player and provincial level wrestler and 3 are high school/club players. BC on the other hand only have 5 CIS University players in total and only 3 who made the CIS playoffs. The majority of the team are high school/club players.

The Ontario coach, Pete Hercus, has Ontario playing good rugby, their defensive pressure rattled BC. BC head coach Dave Grisdale has little time to reorganize as BC takes on the Wolf Pack tomorrow which may be an indication if BC will be in contention for 2nd/3rd/4th in the four team competition.

BC Sends Men's U19 and Women's U20 Teams to National Championships in Ontario: Tournaments Start this Week

BC Rugby media release
posted July 12 2016

BC Rugby is proud to officially announce the U20 Women's and U19 Men's Fifteens Teams that will competing at the upcoming Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC). The tournament takes place July 14th-19th in Markham, Ontario.

The BC Rugby U19 Men's Fifteens Team will be aiming to win a fifth title in the last six years, while the BC Rugby U20 Women’s Fifteens Team are looking to claim top spot in the country for the first time.

Both rosters will feature a number of players who have previously been part of National Rugby Festival winning Teams with BC Rugby at the U16 and U18 levels, in addition to several players who have represented Rugby Canada in U18 and U20 competitions.

“From our first meeting we talked about team values of required discipline, courage and respect to play the game that suits this team," said BC Rugby U20 Women's Coach, Dave Grisdale. "The message heading into the CRCs is to focus on the process and the outcome will take care of itself."

The BC Rugby U20 Women fielded a young team in 2015 and struggled at times against more established competition. This year’s side features a balance of newcomers, veterans and some of the rising stars of Canadian Women’s University Rugby.

"There are a lot of new faces in this squad, and through the short time we have been training, we have come together as a cohesive unit," said BC Rugby U20 Women's Team scrum-half, Nicole Crowley from Victoria. "We will be looking to build off the base we have established over the past few weeks and continue to build towards each game. We obviously want to do well in Toronto, so sticking to the game plan and following the process will be key for us."

The BC Rugby U19 Men captured the 2015 CRC title in dramatic fashion, as a potential Championship winning penalty kick from Ontario Blues’ fullback Andrew Coe was turned back by strong winds on the final play of the game. This year, the Men from BC know that they will face another strong test from their rivals, with teams aiming to take down the reigning champs.

"This is a very talented group of players who are fierce University rivals, but who have come together to represent BC," said BC Rugby U19 Men's Team Coach, Curry Hitchborn. "The core of this team won the U18 Nationals with BC Rugby as sixteen year-olds, and players like Nick Frost, Liam Doll, Callum Botchar and Connor Sampson have gone on to play for Canada at the U20 level. We'll have those guys on the Team, plus players who have returned from overseas to compete for BC, like Ben Scher, who has been studying in England, and Fraser Hurst, who has been playing in New Zealand. It should be a fun tournament."

"During training the atmosphere was light, but still serious," said UVic Vikes' and BC Rugby U19 Men’s Team fullback, Noah Bain. "Most of the team has been playing together for a couple years now, and Coaches Curry (Hitchborn) and Ken (Erikson) trust us, so we've clicked well quite quickly. We have high expectations to do well in Toronto and we know that we can fulfill them."
