The Annual Gobbler Rugby Tournament is celebrating its 40th this year in Abbotsford on Oct 8th and 9th.
The Gobbler has been a big part of the rugby culture in the Fraser Valley for the past 40 years. It started as a small tournament at McMillan park in Abbotsford with one field and a lacrosse box for the beer gardens! It grew to having a Div 1 men’s division and a Div 3 men’s divison over the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
The women’s division was added and the men’s went to one open division.
Teams from Oregon, California, Alberta, Alaska, Washington, Idaho and all over British Columbia have attended the Gobbler over the years.
The tournament has hosted McKechnie Cup games and Canadian Championship games in the past.
The Gobbler is one of the great social tournaments that is left in BC and organizers hope to get many clubs supporting the tourney for its 40th anniversary this year and are looking for Old Boys teams to have an old boys division for the Saturday!
