Canada v USA - Americas Pacific Challenge

Canada Blow 30-13 Lead After 47 Minutes: Fall 47-37 to USA: VIDEO MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

posted Oct 12 2016
[ed. comments below]

It was a disappointing loss as Canada looked very much in control until Barkwill received a yellow card at the 53 minute mark and then Canada fell apart leaking in four successive tries. It's still unclear what Barkwill received the yellow for but the referee's gestures seemed to indicate an intentional knock down of the ball.

First half tries by Doug Fraser and Ben LeSage (2) had Canada ahead at the break 23-13. Cima was accurate in his kicking for goal, one area the Americans had a clear advantage during the match.

Lucas Rumball opened Canada's account in the second half and Canada were looking strong at 30-13, they were dominating the scrums and the forwards were winning the contact area. The one area that hinted troubles ahead was the poor decision making in the backline. Aimless kicking from hand, missed kickoffs, the inability to play the territory game using the boot prevented Canada from applying pressure and closing out the game. Once they folded during the yellow card there was no coming back. Gaps started to appear in the defensive backline, tackles were missed and the USA took advantage with four tries. Canada claimed one back near the end of the match by Albornoz to make the final score 47-37.

Positives for Canada include their scrum when the starting front row were in the game, Brouwer, Barkwill, Kotlewski. It conceded a couple of penalties when the replacements came on in the second half. The short game by the forwards worked well. The play of Ben LeSage and Kainoa Lloyd in the backline was encouraging. Disappointments include the lack of precision: a dropped ball during a driving maul; #8 unable to control the ball at his feet in a scrum heading for the try line; grubber kicks that went directly to the defensive player; clearance kicks that went directly to hand. Also disappointing is that Canada flew in a backs coach from New Zealand to get this performance - the USA scored all their tries through the backs.

Canada finish out the tournament against Samoa on the 16th.

USA Announce Both Rosters for Wednesday's Match: LIVE STREAM 10:15am

posted Oct 11 2016
[ed. comments below, Rugby Canada published their roster about 11:20am and yes the Americans had it correct, and yes it is Mike Sheppard from Ontario. Interesting to note the battle of #10s is a replay of last year's U20 qualifier between Canada and USA.]

Live stream at worldrugby.org

As of 11:00am PT the only Canada roster we've seen is the one published by USA in their press release, so we'll go with that and, if necessary, make corrections when Rugby Canada release their version.

The front row remains the same with Lucas Albornoz moving from the bench to a starting position at lock. Admir Cejvanovic replaces Baillie in the loose forwards. McRorie resumes his role at captain but partners with Povey at #10 with Parfrey taking the bench. Ngongo replaces Moor in the starting rotation at wing and Doug Fraser replaces Guiseppe du Toit in the centres.

Phil Mackenzie made a statement on social media that he suffered a concussion in training and has returned home

.

There's no mention of Nanyak Dala or Kyle Baillie in the American version of the rosters but they do list a Sheppard. The only Sheppard we know would be Michael Sheppard (Stoney Creek) who played for the Ontario Blues.

UPDATE: Dala is listed as injured as is Moor. Baillie is listed as a non-dressing sub. Sean Ferguson has been added as a non-dressing sub.
