Canada v Samoa - Americas Pacific Challenge

Canada Drops 27-22 Decision to Samoa to Finish 0-3 at Americas Pacific Challenge

MONTEVIDEO — Canada 'A' lost 27-22 to Samoa 'A' Sunday to conclude its Americas Pacific Challenge campaign.

Canada got a first half penalty try while Ben LeSage and Gordon McRorie also touched down in the second half.

Samoa took an early 7-0 lead before Andrew Ferguson got Canada on the board in the 12th minute with a penalty. After a second Samoan try pushed their lead to 14-3, Canada grabbed a penalty try in the 32nd minute with Ferguson converting.

However, Samoa scored their third converted try just before the break to take a 21-10 lead into the interval.

LeSage would score his fourth try of the tournament in the 51st minute after great work by Rory McDonell and Kainoa Lloyd out wide set LeSage up to take a pass inside and race in under the posts with Ferguson again converting.

Canada would then close the deficit even more with McRorie touching down after taking a Lucas Rumball pass from a scrum, throwing a show-and-go to pull in the Samoan defence before exploiting a hole to run in untouched to give Canada a 22-21 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

A penalty two minutes later restored the Samoan lead before a last gasp drop-goal sealed a 27-21 victory.

Canada were winless in their two other APC games after defeats to Argentina XV and USA Selects.

Canada's senior men's team returns to action next month with test matches against Ireland, Romania and Samoa.

Canada v Samoa at 8am Sunday - Roster Announced

[ed. comments below]

Canada gets one last chance to come away with a win when they take on Samoa 'A' on Sunday. Canada had control of the game against USA but went into a funk between the 50-70 minute mark where they let in four tries. Head coach Mark Anscombe with former Auckland skills coach Paul Feeney will try to get 80 quality minutes out of the squad. Feeney was let go by Auckland in August but has been Anscombe's choice for assistant coach during tours.

Kyle Baillie remains an undressed sub for the second game in a row, seemingly falling out of favour with the head coach as he's not listed among the injured players.

Andrew Ferguson and Pat Parfrey form the new halfback combination. Sean Ferguson gets his first start on the wing after coming in as an injury replacement. Burnaby's Ryan Ackerman gets the start at tighthead.

The game is at 8am PT and should be streamed live at worldrugby.org

MONTEVIDEO — Canada ‘A’ senior men’s head coach Mark Anscombe has named his starting XV for Sunday’s Americas Pacific Challenge finale against Samoa ‘A’.

Anscombe has made six changes to his starting lineup as Canada looks to end the tournament on a high.

Rob Brouwer, Ray Barkwill and Ryan Ackerman make up the front row while Lucas Albornoz and Adrian Wadden line-up at lock.

In an unchanged back row, Lucas Rumball and Matt Heaton start at flanker with Admir Cejvanovic at No. 8.

Andrew Ferguson gets the start at scrum-half in place of Gordon McRorie while Pat Parfrey comes back into the starting XV at fly-half. Sean Ferguson will make his tournament debut on one wing with Kainoa Lloyd on the other while Guiseppe du Toit and Ben LeSage, who scored two tries Wednesday, start at centre. Rory McDonell gets his third straight start at fullback.

Canada will be looking to conclude the APC with a win. After falling 56-29 to Argetina XV in their tournament opener, Canada lost 47-37 to the USA Selects Wednesday.

Sunday’s game kicks off at 11am ET/8am PT and can be seen LIVE on www.worldrugby.org.

Funded by World Rugby, the Americas Pacific Challenge is in its inaugural year and looks to boost the high-performance pathway for the test arena and supports the Americas Rugby Championship and Pacific Nations Cup as well as November international test window preparation.

Pool A features Argentina XV, USA Selects and Samoa A, while Fiji Warriors, Canada A and Uruguay A are in Pool B. The tournament will be a round-robin, first-past-the-post tournament format played across three competition rounds. Teams will play each side in their opposite pool once, with the winner and final rankings determined by the total number of competition points accrued across the three rounds.
