University 7s March 17-18

A good decision by RC to move the University 7s back to Langford and decouple it from the Canada 7s which is being held the weekend before. Last year in Burnaby the event was lost in the quagmire in more ways than one. It was overshadowed by the Canada 7s and had to share the muddy fields with the high school 7s, it didn't go well in our opinion. The following from Rugby Canada.

Registration is now open for the 2017 University Sevens.

The tournament will take place March 17-18, 2017, in Langford at Rugby Canada’s Centre of Excellence at Westhills Stadium.

The 2016 tournament was held at Burnaby RFC in March ahead of the inaugural HSBC Canada Sevens at BC Place in Vancouver.

The women’s competition was won by the UBC Thunderbirds while the UVic Vikes won the men’s competition.

Space will be filled on a 'first come, first serve' basis. Once both the men’s and women’s divisions have reached 16 teams, teams looking to register after that, will be put on a waiting list for the tournament.

Maria played second row for Canada at the last World Cup.

Upright Rugby Wins NYC 7s Premier High School Division

Upright Rugby out of the Toronto area is one of the few private academies for elite 7s player development in Canada and certainly the one getting the best tournament results. In the USA there are private academies in each region driving the Olympic dream, working in cooperation with USA Rugby. In Canada private enterprise hasn't been welcomed by the provincial and national unions. There's almost been an adversarial relationship (see recent PRO Rugby decision). That's slowly changing in Ontario but there's been little movement in BC where the BCRU controls the game. We recently heard from Upright Rugby Director Tyler Leggatt.

"Just wanted to connect and let you know that our Upright Rugby Boys U18s won the Cup in NYC 7s HS Premier Division after a convincing day of pool games. Final was 32-12 over Rugby Pennsylvania.

The Jr Men went undefeated on the day with 185 PF and 38 PA including two shutouts. This is the first time we've won the cup there and are excited that this comes on the eve of the HS Elite Series.

Our Jr Women were in a bit tougher, going 2-1 in pool play, and then losing in Cup Semi. The "bronze-lining" to the day was taking third with a mere seven players left in their squad due to injury."
