Top Five Stories in 2016 Selected by Reader Numbers: Americas Rugby Championship, Club Rugby, Shawnigan Centennial

These top 5 may be surprising but it's what the numbers say our readers are interested in. People are interested in what's happening locally, whether it's the Americas Rugby Championship in Langford, club rugby on the island and mainland or the Shawnigan Lake Centennial event. It could further be broken down to club rugby and national men's XVs, 3 of the top 5 stories involve local BC club rugby, 2 of the top 5 involve the men's XVs players.

What didn't make the top 5 is also suprprising, the women's 7s team winning Bronze at the Olympics, the men's international tests in June and November, the men's 7s series. The Bears v Wolfpack story came in 9th after more club rugby, at 10th was the men's Olympic repechage tournament, which didn't end well for Canada. The men's U18 tour to Ireland made the top 20, as did the Langford 7s (the local tournament not the women's Canada Sevens in Langford). The men's Canada Sevens in Vancouver made the top 20 as did the men's Maple Leaf 7s tour to South America in January. Claiming the last top 20 spot was the age-grade National Championships where BC won three gold, a silver and bronze.

Americas Rugby Championship Preview

Actually it was the article in the run up to the tournament announcing the team that was the most popular. Evan Olmstead was originally one of the 28 selected but then he got an offer to play in Europe and his career took off. Kyle Gilmour was brought in as a replacement. Ilnicki and Sears_Duru also made their way to Europe and won't be available this year. This was the roster selected for the match day 23 against Uruguay, the first match. What will the selections look like this year as Canada take on Argentina, Chile and USA on consecutive weekends at home starting Feb 4th. Another highlight last year was women's coach Francois Ratier coming in at the last minute to guide the team through the tournament after Crowley announced he was leaving. Jamie Cudmore also helped as Forwards coach.

BC Rugby Weekend of October 1st

A popular weekend, Braid, Mack and Mullins were playing for the Bays that weekend, there were photos and match videos. Abby tied the Ravens in an unexpected result. Burnaby and UBC were matched up, a preview of the mainland final. In this match Burnaby were the victors, UBC reversed that result in the final.

BC Club Finals 2016

Not a surprise as the 2015-16 club season wrapped up April 30th. UBC defeated Burnaby in the men's Premier final and CW defeated Westshore in the women's Premier final. There were interviews, photos and match highlights. Abbotsford, Capilano and Kelowna also were in the news capturing titles.

BC Rugby Weekend of September 17th

Another popular weekend as anticipation for the 2016-17 club season was high. The Sevens players were on work action still so were playing XVs that weekend. Harry Jones, Mike Fuailefau, Pat Kay, Adam Zaruba were all on the pitch in club colours.

Shawnigan Centennial Rugby Festival

This was a special weekend and outshone the Canada v Japan game, also on June 12th, with our readers. There were a couple of preliminary games featuring the Shawnigan girls' and boys' teams but the main match was Hyde-Lay XV vs Emerging Canada. It was no contest as the Hyde-Lay XV ran up a 75-5 win. The backline of Anton Ngongo, George Barton, Doug Fraser, Crosby Stewart and Conor Braid were particularly effective.
