Thunderbirds Run Rampant in Win Over Vikes: Nanaimo and Westshore Claim Wins in Island Div 1

posted Jan 21 2017

UBC 51 - UVic 14

UBC started slowly with two penalties by Adam McQueen but brought in the big artillery soon after with South African prop Clint Lemkus going over followed by former Irish U20 front rower Chris Taylor. It was 20-0 at that point, UVic grabbed one back to make it 20-7 at half time. UBC started strong in the second half with Cole Keffer on the wing extending UBC's lead to 25-7, then other winger Manar Kulkan put one over for a 32-7 lead. More of the same for UBC with scrum half Jorden Sandover Best scoring two tries and it was now well beyond reach at 44-7. Theo Sauder added one more and UVic closed out the scoring for a final of 51-14. The match was also for the Wightman Boot a trophy contested between the two schools. UVic leads the all time wins 27-18 but UBC have won the last four including today's win. UBC look on track to make another run at the Premier title and the Rounsefell Cup.

Jorden Sandover-Best reflects on win "Big boys winning the dirty work and hairdos finishing the tries"

Island Div 1

Nanaimo continued their winning ways against a tenacious Cowichan squad at the piggie dome. Nanaimo started the game strong and extended that lead early in the second half but Cowichan finished with momentum and closed the gap to 45-36 at the whistle.

Westshore came out ahead 38-27 in their first match of the new season. They've managed to hold on to their national team players through relegation and we hear that national team hooker Eric Howard suited up for them today in the win.

Spring Season Gets Partial Start This Weekend with Seven Matches: UVic @ UBC; Nanaimo @ Cowichan; Port Alberni @ Westshore: ROSTERS ADDED

[ed. comments below]

It's a partial start to the season with 2 matches on the mainland and five on the island. The season will be in top gear next weekend as all leagues except Women's Premier get going.

UVic @ UBC

The first men's premier match highlights the weekend schedule, this match was postponed from last weekend due to weather. It's a strong rivalry between the two university programs, for so long UVic held the upper hand but last few seasons the Thunderbirds have been dominant. It's likely to continue that pattern on Saturday. UVic, to compound their troubles, had a couple of key players selected for the Canada 7s team this week, Isaac Kaay and Lucas Hammond. Crosby Stewart may still be on the injured list, even though named to the Maple Leaf South American tour, he never left the ground due to a training injury. UBC have Theo Sauder back healthy and have a dominant front row. Add to that advantage a home field crowd and UBC go in as favourites. We'll post the rosters as they come in. Prediction: UBC by 8.
