Hard & Cold on the Fraser Delta: Burnaby v James Bay Match Report

Saturday at Ex-Brits Field in the Fraser River Delta, JBAA took the field against Burnaby Lake in the first game of this season’s BCRU League play. The games were hard – and the Bays’ “usual spectators” froze our appendages off, under a sunny sky, with air temperature approaching zero.
Our Prems trailed 6-12 at the half – and were still in the game at 9-15 until about 12 minutes from full time. The Lakers, led by their forwards, scored two converted trys to finish up ahead 29 to 9. Laker try scorers were reported to be Jeke Gotegote, Micha Govorchin, Lucas Albornoz and Ryan McHollister. Mike Goodall added three converts.
Our men in Navy Blue – with Andrew MacPherson and Jason Lines new in our Prems front row – and Cheese Waldmaan stepping up in the backs – put in a determined defensive performance. It was also good to see Neil Meechan and Rhys Davies back in our lineup. Our guys were competitive pretty much throughout – and as a few more bodies dribble in, will only get better. Elliot Mitrou took care of our Navy Blue scoring, with three penalty goals, before being dragged off (and subsequently, through the ferry terminal) with a significant ankle injury. JBAA does not expect to see him on-field for awhile.
JBAA will practice hard this week – look to get stronger - go out to Wallace Field to play the Vikes next Saturday.
JBAA Ones got trampled 47-0. But as, Head Coach Pete observed, “I saw a lot of good play out there. They will improve next week against the Norse.”
