Abbotsford Match Reports: Women Win at Home; Men Lose to Langley at Crush Crescent

by Mark Adams

Div. 1 Women

The Abbotsford Women hosted UBCO this past Saturday at Exhibition Park. The game was delayed by two hours due to road closures and a broken down bus, but UBCO finally made it after a long journey. Abby dominated from the beginning with great forward ball possession which the backs capitalized on with a couple of early tries from winger Erin Skillings. The dangerous center combination of Natalie Teteris and Shalaya Valenzuela broke through the line many times and were rewarded with a try for Teteris and three tries for Valenzuela. Flyhalf Steph Wiebe made some good tactical kicks and the entire team defended very well.

The forwards then began to chip in with the scoring when loose forwards Lauren Arthur and Megan Chambers scoring two tries each. Lock Ashlyn Smith, who had a very strong game, then crossed the line. One of the players of the game was Yuka Kubota who made many tackles and counter attacked well from the fullback position. She also scored a try and Steph Wiebe made six converts to make the final 72-17 for Abby. The ARFC would like to thank referee Julie Beyea who did a great job and was very accommodating with the change in kickoff time. Thanks also to UBCO who managed to overcome many obstacles and make the trip down for a fun day. Next up Abby women host Comox at Ex Park November 4th at 11:30am.

Div. 2 Men

The Div. 2 men travelled to face valley rivals, Langley at Crush Crescent this past Saturday. The 2’s are a little short on men these days but were able to field a full 15 thanks to a couple players who pulled the dreaded duty! The game started out with Langley controlling possession and battering Abbotsford, but after 4 minutes of punishing rugby, Abbotsford never broke and replied with some attack of their own. After working their way downfield, the 2’s broke the Langley line and scored on a quick tap penalty through Albert Grigorov. Hirschman converted and Abbotsford was up 7-0 after 20. The match went back and forth with the Abbotsford forwards like Rideout, Ginther, and James making some big tackles. After an Abbotsford yellow card Langley finally broke through in extra time to level the scores. In the second half, Langley with the slope in their favour, continued to press and eventually scored twice more and added a few penalties to round out the scoring at 27 - 7. Credit goes to Langley for their well-deserved win and for the great hosting post-match! Next week the div 2 men host Rowers.

Div. 1 Men

The Div. 1 game started out opposite to the previous match with Abbotsford on the front foot and touched down through via prop forward, Brent Bradbury. Sol Puckey converted and Abbotsford were up 7-0 early. A second, unconverted try followed and Abbotsford found themselves up 12-0 fifteen minutes into the game. Langley, however showed no quit and worked themselves into the game by scoring two converted tries before the break to lead 14-12. With the slope in their favour in the second half, the match followed a similar pattern as the div 2 game. Langley were able to press and convert their visits to the 22 with a well-earned penalty to stretch their lead to 5. Abbotsford pressed with some long runs and sustained pressure but couldn’t get over the line until Conrad Rybkowski made a big break and found a supporting Reese Gibson to put Abbotsford up with a try under the posts. Puckey converted and Abbotsford found themselves up again. Langley showed characteristic heart and skill and quickly replied with a try of their own which ultimately sealed the game, 22-19. Abbotsford would like to thank the referees in division 1 and 2, as well as Langley for the hosting out on the field. Next week the div 1 men host Rowers.

ARFC Senior Women - 45
Kamloops RFC -22

Tries: Teteris, (2), Valenzuela, (2), Dunsmore, Arthur, Johnston-Herrera
Converts: Wiebe, (4), Valenzuela, (2)

The ARFC Women's team traveled to Kamloops Saturday to attempt to keep their undefeated season going. It took the first fifteen minutes of the game to shake the rust off the long bus ride as there were many mistakes made. However, the women kept working and eventually things started to come together.

Hard running backs Shalaya Valenzuela and Natalie Teteris each scored two tries a piece to get the Abby women ahead on the scoreboard. Flyhalf Steph Wiebe, in her first game back this season, placed some tactical kicks deep into Kamloops half and forward Jerusha Dunsmore capped off some hard work from Lauren Arthur by scoring under the posts. Lauren Arthur then scored her own try and Viviani Johnston-Herrera scored one as well. Steph Wiebe had 4 converts and Shalaya Valenzuela added another to make the final score 45-22.

It was a great road trip and thanks to Kamloops RFC for the game and great hosting as always. The girls are home next week to UBCO.
