Weekend Results: Lakers Sink Vikes; Caps Top Valhallians; CW Ground Ravens; Bays Defeat Lomas; T-Birds Smoke Hornets

UVic 10 @ Burnaby 29

Two tries by the backs, inside centre Neil Maclaine and wing Mate Macleod put the home side up 12-0. Vikes answered back before half for a 12-5 HT score. A couple of second half scores by the front row Juan Videla and Andrew Lackner helped Burnaby hit 29, Grady Bowd replied for Vikes for a 29-10 final. Vikes travel cross town to James Bay next weekend and Burnaby travel south to Seattle.

PREGAME
#3 hosting #9, UVic returning from the Uni championships are a bit battered plus missing players to national team duty. Gradyn Bowd has returned to #10 which is positive but there are a few unfamiliar names in the roster likely brought up from the Norsemen. Crosby Stewart is back in the Premier lineup and they have some pace in the backline, the question is will they see enough ball? Burnaby should dominate in the forwards, they have a new name (to us) Juan Videla, although further research shows he has played with Burnaby's 3rd div so they're going to their depth chart as well. Expect Burnaby to win this through the forwards, how much will depend on the backs. Prediction: Burnaby by 8.

Westshore 6 @ Capilano 26

Westshore Reserves won the early match 33-0 but couldn't put any tries on the board in Premier against the home side. Westshore host Nanaimo next weekend while Caps visit the Lomas.

PREGAME
Westshore had a disappointing outing against Lomas last weekend, they sit in 10th, Caps are in 5th. Casey Reed comes back in as hooker and the few times we've seen him, he's impressed. He played for UVic and was Canada U20, he's the sort of young player that needs a look at the senior level in some of the Canada A tournaments. Clay Panga also returns to the roster so they should have a better effort this week. Caps coming off two strong wins against Vikes and James Bay after being upset by Nanaimo. Caps on form would be favourites, we'll see what difference Reed and Panga make for Westshore. Prediction: Caps by 5.

WESTSHORE

Ravens 15 @ CW 37

At least the second game in Premier where an ambulance had to be called. A Westshore player was taken to hospital at the Capilano match as well. It was a Ravens player that went down in this match. It was 18-3 for CW at half time. Ravens record their first loss. Ravens host UBC next weekend and CW have a bye.

PREGAME
Ravens put their unbeaten streak on the line and fortunately hit CW at home without most of their Canada players. They do have a couple though, Nanyak Dala is working his way back into form at openside and Rob Povey is a top #10 at club level. Anton Ngongo from the U20 program has speed on the outside, Doug Fraser is consistent in the centres, it's a good backline. Ravens obviously have a solid roster sporting a 8-0 record but are missing a few key players, Moran their Irish #8, Phelan the former Canada second row and McLelland the 7s star. We'll see if they're the same team without those players, could be a close one. Prediction: Ravens by 3.

CW

James Bay 27 @ Meraloma 14

No upset in the making although the Bays had to work hard in the second half to overcome a 11-10 halftime deficit. Three penalties in the second half gave the visitors a 19-11 lead. Teams exchanged penalties to take the score to 22-14 before Shea Wakefield took one over the line for a 29-14 final.

PREGAME
This could be the upset of the weekend, the Lomas are surprising a few teams, wins over UVic, Westshore and Nanaimo and sitting in 8th place. The Bays in 6th are missing some key players, no Sean White who was part of a horrific head clash last weekend. Without Mack and Braid he was their play maker. No sign of Graham Harriman in the second row. Clayton Meeres and George Barton not in the starting XV. Then having to travel to Vancouver, this has all the signs of an upset but we'll give JBAA a slight nod based on previous record. Prediction: Bays by 1.

JAMES BAY

UBC 76 @ Nanaimo 3

Nanaimo ran into an on form UBC side, 3 time defending champions in Premier and it wasn't pretty, 76-3 the final. Nanaimo try to regroup and head south to Westshore next weekend while UBC visit UBCOB Ravens.

PREGAME
Anyone going against UBC would be the underdog, Nanaimo with only one win this season will struggle with the pace out wide. Clint Lemkus at tighthead is probably one of the best props in the country right now, he isn't Canada eligible until 2019 but if he sticks around until then he's almost guaranteed a national team spot. Nanaimo will struggle in the scrum against UBC. Theo Sauder is out due to concussion protocol but they have players like Nate Rees the former Wales U20 player to do lots of damage in the backline. Nanaimo are missing their top try scorer Jared Stephens who was picked up by the Maple Leaf 7s team going to Dubai. We'll see how close Nanaimo can keep it but in recent matches the last 20 minutes have been unkind to them. Prediction: UBC by 16.
