Day 2 Wrapup: BC v Ontario U18 Men Final; BC U18 Women Finish 3rd; UVic Win NextGen Women; BC Win NextGen Men
The national U18 tournaments are almost complete, tomorrow the finalists get to play in front of the crowd at BC Place. On the men's side that will be BC v Ontario, a fitting final. BC have looked good this tournament, one of the standouts has been Mill Bay's Reece Tudour Jones who attends Shawnigan Lake School. The BC women unfortunately couldn't find their top game and lost twice to Ontario in the tournament, the second loss knocking them out of the final tomorrow. Handling errors and losing the breakdown battles were common themes in those games. Ontario will face Alberta in the women's final.
Over at the Vancouver Rugby Festival, the NextGen division, BC defeated Bayside's Fiji Blond team in a close match to win gold. On the women's side UVic defeated BC to claim the title and a $1,500 payout.
In the U16 competition, the boys division saw Edmonton edge out Earl Marriott for the title. In the girls division it was the 3 BC teams finishing on top with BC Gold winning gold, followed by BC White and BC Blue. Thunder Indigenous rugby came fourth in the 7 team tournament.

The national U18 championships were taking place in Burnaby and across town the Vancouver Rugby Festival was starting at UBC.
National U18 Men
BC are undefeated on Day 1 defeating Ontario and Alberta. They'll face New Brunswick tomorrow in the QF, then likely the winner of Saskatchewan v Ontario 2 in the semi.
Take a look at this highlight of Izzak Kelly, he was originally listed as an injury replacement and 13th man on the squad. The big unit subs on with a minute left in the match vs Alberta and proceeds to destroy the scrum, create a turnover, fling the opposition prop out of the way. Then on a subsequent play takes a low pass (on a very wet day), takes on two defenders, offloads the ball driving forward, which sets up the last try. I would say he definitely merits more game time. He hails from Earl Marriott high school and plays for Bayside.
National U18 Women
BC looked good early on but really struggled in their last match against Ontario 1. Three teams are tied BC, Ontario 1 and Alberta. BC draws Quebec in the QF match tomorrow.
Meanwhile over at the Vancouver Rugby Festival in the senior division BC and Fiji Blond are undefeated and look destined for a final matchup. UBC didn't send their top players, they sent a mixture of 1st and 2nd year players for development.
UVic and BC are battling it out the top, BC losing to Central Washington and UVic losing to BC. Central Washington are third with a 2-2 record.
Edmonton Gold were cruising through the division until their last match against Thunder Indigenous rugby and got their first loss, Thunder got their first win. Vancouver and Earl Marriott are in the running as well.
BC are dominating with BC Gold setting the standard.
