Canada U19 Face Ireland U18 Clubs and Schools Team: Starting Lineups

There's no doubt the Irish team will be more rugby savvy, they start rugby earlier and live in a culture where rugby is more revered. They would be expected to have the technical edge in this matchup. What Canada will have to counter with is physicality while keeping their error count down. Canada have a one year age advantage in the matchup which may be a key factor. Canada's errors will be punished however and they have to play a smart game. Some of these players will be pushing for national U20 positions this year and next.

Coach Dean Murten established the game plan, "The focus for tomorrow’s game is to be direct and physical in order to win the collisions up front."

There are a number of BC connections on the team, the Thunder Indigenous program have four players in the starting roster, Brandon Schellenberger (#9), Hunter Grant (#4), Peyton Eagar (#7), and Siaki Vikalani (#6). Quentin James at second row, guessing that's Mike James son, currently studying at Perpignan Academy in France. Nick Carson, one of the Carson clan from CW at #8. Myles Donoghue from UBC at #10, another UBC player at #12 Conor Byron, and Evan Norris at wing. Kyle Tremblay from Surrey at #15 rounds out the BC contingent.

The game starts at 5am PT on Saturday (noon in Ireland) so results will be known when most in BC arise.

The Irish Rugby Union also has a write up on the match with their rosters which we've appended below. There's no indication there will be any live streaming but hopefully Rugby Canada will get the game tape up on Youtube or at least the highlights.

Dean Murten has announced Canada's U19 Men's starting line-up to face Ireland Clubs & Schools tomorrow.

The 17-day tour includes two fixtures against the Ireland Clubs & Schools Team, as well as games against Leinster, Ulster and Munster.

"The boys have settled in after a long day of traveling and we've had three good training sessions. The goal of training has been to integrate all the players that didn’t attend the Ulster tour with those that did. The focus for tomorrow’s game is to be direct and physical in order to win the collisions up front. Then we'll play what’s in front of us." - Dean Murten

The Ireland Under-18 Clubs and Schools team, sponsored by PwC, has been selected for their first of two matches against the Canada Under-19s at Templeville Road on Saturday (kick-off 12pm).

Head coach Mark Butler, who is assisted by Colm Tucker and Adrian Flavin, has selected Paddy McAlpine, who is fresh from winning the Ulster Schools Senior Cup with Campbell College, Bruff loosehead Fionn Flanagan and Wicklow hooker Mark Nicholson as the starting front row.

Newbridge College's Cian Prendergast captains the Ireland team from the second row where he is partnered by Eoin O'Connor from Waterpark. O'Connor's Munster team-mate Evan Murphy, who captained the province to an Under-18 Clubs Interprovincial title earlier in the season, is joined by Exiles pair Chris Moore and Joshua Dunne in the back row.

Sedbergh School's Michael Cooke and Charlie O'Doherty, who has come up through the minis and youth ranks at Newcastle West RFC, will lead the Irish back-line from half-back, with another Exiles-Munster pairing at centre where Hayden Hyde from the Harlequins Academy combines with Tommy Downes, who played for CBC Cork in last Sunday's Munster Schools Senior Cup final defeat to Glenstal Abbey.

Bath Academy's Oran McNulty, who was a try scorer for the Ireland U-18 Clubs team against Portugal in November, returns for a second year at this age-grade. He starts at full-back with Jack Hunt from Rockwell College and Wasps talent Tom Bacon filling the wing berths.

There is a strong Connacht representation on the replacements bench with four players from the west included - the Buccaneers trio of Liam Winnett, Darragh Murray and Saul O'Carroll as well as O'Carroll's Garbally College team-mate Shane Jennings. Full-back Jennings was a try scorer in Garbally's Connacht Schools Senior Cup final victory over Coláiste Iognáid on Tuesday.

Saturday afternoon's fixture is the first of two matches between the Ireland and Canada sides, with the second encounter set for next Wednesday at Donnybrook.

With the Leinster Schools Senior Cup final between Blackrock College and Belvedere College taking place today due to last weekend's postponement, players involved in that game who have been selected will join up with the Ireland U-18 squads next week.
