2018 Rees Boot Game Preview and Rosters: SMUS v Oak Bay on Tuesday 6:30pm
UVIC’s Wallace Field will be the site of the 24th Rees Boot Game - a 1st XV battle between traditional city and provincial powers SMUS and Oak Bay. The series is currently deadlocked at 11-11-1. Though the Barbarians enter this year's contest as very strong favourites, the result in three of the past four most recent encounters has gone the way of the underdog.
The annual match, the brainchild of former Oak Bay coach Gary Johnston and SMUS alumnus Gareth Rees, has produced some marvelous, colorful and thrilling clashes over the years. May this encounter be no exception.
Kickoff is 630pm on Tuesday, April 17.
SMUS, holders of the Boot thanks to a 17-7 victory a year ago, and currently the #1 ranked AA school in the province, will rely heavily on experienced midfielders Luke Rainier-Pope and Matt Hagkull. Both are dangerous runners and, in concert with newcomer Peter Koltronis, can hopefully test the opposition defence.
Up front, flankers Owen Weismiller and Simon Gilmour have been in consistently fine form. However, of even more importance will be the work of an unheralded front five, led by captain Nick Papaloukas, who simply must secure quality first phase possession.

Oak Bay presents its finest team in recent memory. Physically big, fast and experienced, the Barbarians are also a "blast from the past", as no fewer than one third of the player's fathers featured prominently in matches vs SMUS many years ago!! Alex Hutcheson, the outstanding performer in the squad's recent unbeaten tour of Spain and Portugal, returns to the lineup, and, along with Nick Carson and captain Tom Abercrombie, forms an imposing back row.
Behind the scrum, centres Lachlan Kratz and Hector Jardine have been a dangerous duo in every game, while Devin Fennerty is an under rated fullback.

Many thanks to the match officials. Please give all three full and deserved support.
Please enjoy what hopefully will be a skilful, spirited and high-energy sporting occasion.
