The Thunder Indigenous Rugby program was started in 2013 to promote rugby to the Indigenous Community in BC. Head coach Phil Mack has been an icon of Canadian rugby and is from the Toquaht Nation. Director John Lyall of Kwakwaka’wakw descent has been one of the driving forces behind the program. Several Thunder junior players have gone on to represent Canada at the U18 and U19 levels. Crosby Stewart the assistant coach currently plays for the UVic Vikes. The planned Haida Gwaii trip will be another chance to reach out to a remote indigenous community. The video below shows the trip to Ahousaht last year.
About Monty Heald Fund
The Monty Heald Fund run through the Canadian Rugby Foundation has been largely responsible for eliminating the pay to play model for national XVs women. Since its launch in January 2017, not a single national team player was asked to reach into her pocket to offset team expenses - she could concentrate on her training and preparations with the team. The administration of the FUND is carried out by a committee of ten members, one of these members is the Player’s Representative for Women’s rugby on the Board of Rugby Canada, currently Maria Samson.
