Schedule and Referee Match Assignments for BC Club Finals
BC Club finals day on Saturday in Abbotsford, 9 divisions to be settled. The schedule and ref assignments listed below. The four matches in the main stadium will be live streamed, link is http://www.bcrugby.com/live/
We'll post the rosters in a separate article when we get them on Friday.
A word about the refs who have been selected. It's a tough job, I've seen hardened players take up the whistle but drop out due to the chatter on the sideline, it's not for everyone but hats off to those who take up the calling. We couldn't have the game without them.
One ref who is new to the BC scene and has made quite an impression is Shanda Mosher-Gallant. Diminutive in size but large in talent, she has reffed four of the men's Premier matches, we've seen two of them and she gets high marks, not only from BCRN but from the players and supporters we've talked to as well. She hails from PEI where she played wing for the UPEI Panthers. In 2014 she won the CIS student-athlete community service award, in 2016 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science. She's been awarded the Women's Premier final on Saturday, which arguably would place her second in the referee rankings behind Chris Assmus who is running the Men's Premier Final. Chris Assmus is now a veteran referee who has been awarded several international matches and is currently working the pro MLR league.
We wish the refs on Saturday all the best.from BCRU
Vancouver, BC – May 2, 2018: The match officials have been confirmed for this Saturday's BC Rugby Club Finals at Abbotsford's Exhibition Park. A strong group has been selected for the flagship event taking pace on May 5th, with a good mix of youth and experience with both the whistle and flag in hand. Excitingly, for the first time, all three women’s division finals will be controlled by female referees. With the female participation on the field showing such impressive growth in the last five years, it is fantastic to see that development is being mirrored in the world of refereeing.
In charge of the Women’s Premier League final is Shanda Mosher-Gallant. In her first season in BC Shanda has refereed four Men’s Premier League matches and has also been involved in matches in every single division of BC Rugby Club Competitions. Rugby World Cup veteran Latoya Blackwood will take charge of the Women’s Division 1 final. Latoya has been a fixture in local derby matches on Vancouver Island and continues to establish herself as an emerging refereeing talent. Heather Lilburn will referee the Women’s Division 2 final. A long-term referee who has battled injury on and off, Heather’s perseverance is second to none. The final is a fitting conclusion to a fine season from her.
The inaugural U23 Division final will be refereed by Toby Mustill. An excellent servant of the game, Tony has featured in Division 1, 2 and Premier League Reserve matches throughout the season. In Division 3, Jamie Levchuk will referee his first career final. Jamie is a well-known figure in the rugby community and has been plying his refereeing trade throughout 1st and 2nd Division rugby as well as Premier Reserve. The Men’s Division 2 final will be refereed by Andy Foster. Andy has featured in Premier League matches as well as several local derby matches on Vancouver Island. Brad Schwalger will referee the Men’s Division 1 match. The 26-year-old has earned his stripes in his first season in BC refereeing everything from U16 girls to Men’s Premier League.
The very experienced Kevin Smith will take charge of the Men’s Premier Reserve final. Kevin has been a fixture in BC Rugby, taking charge of several key matches including the iconic Castaway Wanderers vs James Bay derby on more than a few occasions. Rounding off the day, Chris Assmus will referee the Men’s Premier League Final. Assisted by semi-final referees Saro Turner and David Smorchevsky, there will be a good combination of experience on the field for the day’s final
