Thunder Camp July 4,5,6 and Thunder 7s Tournament July 6,7 at Shawnigan Lake School

National team head coach Damian McGrath is always on the lookout for future promising rugby talent and if you're a U15, U17 or U19 player who wants to get seen then you should be at the Thunder 7s tournament July 6th and 7th at Shawnigan Lake School. National team head coach Damian McGrath will be there as he was last year and he'll hand out the medals to the winning teams and to the tournament all-stars.

Also attending will be Tony La Carte who identifies youth talent for the BC teams. Women's national team head coach John Tait has expressed interest in attending if family commitments allow.

Talk to your coach about entering a team or if you're an individual player contact John Lyall - he'll find you a team to play on. The tournament runs Friday evening (6th) and all day Saturday (7th), U15, U17 and U19 divisions boys and girls.

There is a camp starting on Wednesday July 4th and it runs until the tournament starts. Part of the graduation is taking part in the tournament representing the hosts, Thunder Rugby.

The camp is aimed at indigenous youth but all are welcome to apply, it includes boarding at Shawnigan Lake school for the duration of the camp and tournament. The cost is a reasonable $225 which includes room and board plus tournament entry on the Thunder team. There's money available to help players in financial need, talk to John, no one is turned away.

If you're just interested in the tournament on Friday evening and Saturday, it's $150 a team so less than $15 per player. If interested in registering individually contact John Lyall for details.

The head coach for the camp is Mandy Marchak, former Canada player in 7s and XVs. Assisting her on the boys side will be Crosby Stewart and Peyton Eagar, both current players with international 7s experience. On the girls side will be Valerie Wideski and Lyric Atchinson, Valerie plays for the national 7s team. All coaches have participated in previous Thunder camps.

Every year there's a cultural event as part of the rugby camp, this year participants will learn the traditional art of drum making from Sts’ailes First Nations member Darren Charlie. Under Darren’s guidance each participant will create their own drum. The cost of material and instruction is included in the camp fees. Hand painting isn't included in the tutorial but camp Director John Lyall will pass on his expertise. These are examples of his work.
