Annual John Cannon Memorial Touch Rugby Event a Success in 2018
by Mark Adams
The Abbotsford Rugby Club hosted the 3rd annual John Cannon Memorial touch rugby tournament this past weekend at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. The event was another huge success with $7,500 raised which helps support local rugby players pursue their dream of playing for their country.
In 2017 the fund was able to support Tausani Levale and she went on to play Canada 7’s. She is currently suiting up with the Canadian women u-20 as they play England and the USA.
In 2018 the Cannon memorial fund was pleased to be able to support two local athletes as they strive to play rugby at the highest levels. Mackenzie Carson and Jake Thiel were both awarded grants this year. Mackenzie was playing at UBC and is currently on tour with Canada u-20 women. Jake Thiel suited up for the Canada men 7’s and Canada u-20 this past year. Congratulations to both of these fantastic rugby players.
The Abbotsford Rugby Club would like to thank all the volunteers, donors, and players who came to this year’s event. In addition, we would like to extend a huge thanks to the players who came over from the island, and from out-of-town.
We look forward to seeing you all next year.
