[ed. comments below, a reader rightly pointed out that the BC senior women have excelled in the summer.]
posted Aug 18 2010

A number of things to cover. First up BC. We recently got shellacked by the Prairies in the senior men’s competition. The score was 41-6 for the Wolf Pack over the Bears. That has to be about the worst result for the BC senior men... ever. People are asking why? A couple of points came to mind, the first one is attitude, here is a quote from a Rugby Canada article on the game: “While the B.C. Bears had a wealth of depth to choose from for the CRC, evident on their letting Cudmore move to the Prairies, James said he stayed true to the idea that the competition was for development purposes.” It’s nice to be so generous and if this competition is just about development and not about regional pride then fine, but don’t expect the fans to support it in a big way. BC rugby fans expect to win, so either it’s development for the national team and lets all go on with our summer holidays let us know when rugby starts in September or if it’s a serious competition and BC pride is at stake, then get serious starting at the coaching level and let others worry about the national development issues. It can’t be both ways, fans won’t buy into it. Talking of holidays brings me to my second point, when has a BC [senior men's] team done well in a summer competition? It’s 7s season here, players are resting and recuperating. Last year the CRC started September 12th for the Bears, their more traditional season and they won the competition. The Bears should hibernate from rugby in the summer, from all accounts they were half-asleep during the game in Calgary last weekend. The irony is we have a provincial coach happy to give top players away for development purposes but the national team coach isn't there to watch it, he's on holidays.

Next issue, the national championships, BC were zero in the Gold department, when did that last happen? And the U18 team were stuffed 43-13 not just beaten. Former coaches of the programs ask “what’s happening”. There seems to be a trend not only in BC but at the national level to put people in charge who are not results oriented. If I’m choosing a coach I’m looking for someone who has a proven record of winning and creating a winning culture, I don’t care how good the resume looks. But I seem to be in the minority. Look at the fiasco with Morgan Williams in the 7s where his positive on-field results in the end meant nothing. There seems to be an emerging trend of style over substance, if you can talk a good game, look good on paper then you really don’t have to produce the results.

Women's World Cup

On a more positive note the Women's World Cup starts this week on Friday with Canada in Pool C taking on Scotland. Also in Canada's pool are Sweden and France. The pool winners advance to the final along with the best 2nd place team. Likely NZ will go through from Pool A, England from Pool B and Canada will have to defeat France to claim Pool C, otherwise rack up the points on Scotland and Sweden and hope for the best 2nd place result.

Dog River Howlers 7s Feature in CFL Halftime Show [from Karl Fix]
[ed I wonder if this could be a record for the largest crowd to watch a 7s game in North America, certainly in Canada.]

In recognition of their "rugby football" roots the Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club (http://www.saskriders.com/) of the Canadian Football League who are celebrating their 100th anniversary have kindly invited the Dog River Howlers RFC (facebook - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2426610840 ) to participate in a rugby 7's game against the local Prairie Fire RFC at the half time of their game against the BC Lions on June 13 here in Regina's Mosaic Stadium (Taylor Field) in front of an estimated sell out crowd of 30,000 fans.

Originally known as the Regina Rugby Club from 1910 to 1923, they changed their name to the Regina Roughriders in 1924 and finally to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1948.

Women's Premier: Burnaby v Meralomas from Ian Trevor

A great match up between the Meralomas and Burnaby Lake will be taking place at UBC’s Wolfson field on Thursday night at 6:30pm. Both teams feature member’s of the World Cup bound National Senior Women’s Team, and with the Lomas looking to make up for a tough loss to the Caps on the weekend, this has all the earmarks of a tough match.

The non playing members of the NSWT will be there fundraising. For those of you who haven’t heard, the team has created a cookbook called:

“Nutritious and Delicious: The NSWT's Guide to Healthy and SCRUMcious On-the-Go Eating”.

The cookbook is $20, with full proceeds going back to the national Women’s program, except for a portion of the sales which are being donated to the Jenny Vincent Coaching Endowment for Women's Rugby.

See you at UBC!

Keeping in Touch with Rugby Parents

One of the interesting and rewarding parts of this job is hearing from the parents of players who come to BC to play in the Premier league. Over the years I've communicated with parents from Newfoundland to Alberta who want to follow their son's rugby career and check BCRN for match reports, photos and video clips. This is also a chance to thank the club scribes and our photographers for making that possible.

I recently received an email from one such parent in South Africa who follows his son's career in the BC Prems. Warren de Bruin who has played at the Currie Cup level in SA now plays for the Ravens and scored the winning try in the upset over UVic. His Dad wrote:

Rugby being a strange game. We can call the games as much as we can based on form no. of internationals... but on the day it counts for nothing.

“Winning is not everything... but wanting to is!”

Well done to the Ravens... great effort boys!

Very exciting to observe this wonderful game from a totally different perspective.

In the big picture the BC Premier has a small footprint in the rugby world but consider that we are being viewed from all areas of the globe and should continually strive to improve our product. Each club has a part in that through maintaining excellence in coaching, player development and recruitment.

Another high-profile player in BC this year was Dean Budd. He played at NPC and Super 14 level and has signed with Northland for next season. He's also playing for the NZ Barbarians when they take on the NZ Maori on June 12th. His Dad who is a Director of the Auckland Blues was in Victoria last week to watch his son play and observe the rugby culture. I'm optimistic after talking to him that we'll see more high level players coming from NZ to spend a year in the BC Prems.

So parents, always good to hear from you.

Successful High School Tournament

Mark,

Wanted to thank you for posting the information about the Scrum Fest. I also want to thank Phil Ohl & his Spartan team for hosting a great tournament.

There were 29 teams in total participating over 3 days. It also had a national & international flavor with the teams from Calgary, USA & Australia.

As a coach at a school where we are re-building the rugby program the Fest is a great way to expose the players to rugby. They got 3-4 games in over the 3 days & watched a whole lot more.

The Rugby Canada camp on the Friday night was a highlight particularly for the out of town teams.

Again thanks for reporting on this but more so THANKS to Phil for the effort that has to go in to pull it off without a hitch.

Rugby Canada Adds Another Staff Position

The spending never stops at HQ as they’ve added the position of Fund Development Manager. The position presumably is targeted to bring more funds into Rugby Canada. I thought that was the job of the Marketing Director who now has been promoted to Director of Commercial Operations and has another staff member under him.

So looking at the 2010 budget they want to bring in $815K from General Marketing and Fundraising (subtract the $55k of donations) so basically $760K from Sponsorship, Dinners, Fishing Trips and a Golf Tournament (470K in sponsorship and 290K in fundraising). The budget also has the laudable goal of only spending $60K in doing so. Of course what the budget projection doesn't show is that they've just spent $50K (or whatever salary the new position carries) on top of the $60K to meet the budget figures.

Writing about Rugby Canada always makes me reflect on management theories. Here are a couple of examples:

The Peter Principle is the principle that "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence."

Parkinson's Law is articulated by the adage "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". It explains bureaucratic growth by two forces: (1) "An official wants to multiply subordinates, not rivals" and (2) "Officials make work for each other." Parkinson notes that the total of those employed inside a bureaucracy rises by 5-7% per year "irrespective of any variation in the amount of work (if any) to be done."

Women's Camp in Alberta Chill - Miss BC Yet?

A reader sent in this comment concerning the NSWT camp being held in Olds, Alberta just north of Calgary. The weather has been less than co-operative and many wondered why Alberta when many players are playing in the BC Women's Premier?

"Don't know if you have followed the madness. They got there it was snowing. Today a huge snow storm with more black outs in Alberta (watch the news tonight) and yesterday on Rugby Canada's web page they show a video of the girls training with gloves on and a frozen ROCK hard field with a little snow on it. What the hell are they doing holding it there when more than half are playing in BC at present, weather conditions, etc?? OH is it because the coach lives there and wants to go home every night?"

Napier Boys High School on the Island

Napier Boys High School of New Zealand (Napier is a twin city of Victoria) are on the Island this week. They are playing matches on Thursday against G.P. Vanier Secondary in Courtenay and are playing a Victoria Select Team at 1:00 on Friday at Windsor Park, made up of junior players from CW, JBAA and Velox, coached by Ken Goodland and organized by CW.

Imports on BC Premier Teams

A couple of readers forwarded on a document created by the BCRU, it seems the competition committee finally got together after the Olympics and cracked down on registration and import quotas and this is what resulted, a club by club inventory of imports.

Bayside 3 – 2 Fiji, 1UK
Burnaby 4 – 2 Fiji, 2 England
Capilano 5 – 1 Russia, 1 NZ, 1 Oz, 2 undeclared
Cowichan 1 – NZ
Castaway Wanderers 5 - 4 NZ, 1 SA
James Bay 1 – 1 USA
Meraloma 6 – 2 UK, 1 France, 1 Romania, 1 NZ, 1 Ireland
UBC Old Boys 5 – 2 NZ, 1 Wales, 1 SA, 1 England

UBC 4 – 1 SA, 1 England, 1 USA, 1 Singapore
UVic None
Velox 3 – 1 NZ, 1 Wales, 1 Scotland

The limit and definition of an import is as follows:

13.1 Clubs are restricted to playing no more than three import players per team in any given game.
13.2.1 The classification of an import player shall be guided by iRB Regulation 8. To classify as a non-import, a player must be:
(a) born in Canada
(b) have one parent or grandparent born in Canada
(c) have completed thirty six consecutive months of Residence immediately preceding the time of playing.

NSWT Team Training in Alberta

The national women’s team is holding a camp in Alberta from April 8 to 18 and at least one BC Women’s Premier coach is not happy that players are missing two weeks of club games leading up to the playoffs. This is a common problem for men and women in World Cup years and there seems little co-ordination between the national and provincial programs in scheduling these events. Half of the players attending the camp in Alberta are playing in the BC Women’s Premier league which prompted another question from the reader, “why not hold the camp in BC”?

Here is the list of players attending the Alberta camp:

1. Marie-Eve Brindamour-Carignan Burnaby Lake Rugby Club

Oak Bay v SMUS Boot Game on Wednesday; RGC1404 in the News; USA 7s Asks for Feedback; A Look at Women Athletes and Funding

[ed. comments below]
posted March 2 2010

Boot Game

The annual "Boot Game" between Oak Bay and SMUS is this Wednesday at 5:00pm at Wallace Field. Tickets are $2.00 for students and $5.00 for adults.

They usually get a decent crowd, over 1,000 in 2008 and the players were thrilled to play in front of a crowd of that size. So get down there and support the future of rugby. Here is a link to the 2008 story on Canada.com.

RGC1404

Just so we don't forget our boys in North Wales here is a link to their game against the Sale Jets which is the Sale Sharks Academy team. The North Wales/Canada team won 31-14 with 8 Canadians in the squad. I understand some of the lads were up past curfew watching Canada take it to the USA in Olympic Hockey. You can take the Canuck out of Canada but you can't take Canada out of the Canuck.

USA 7s

I was very impressed that I received a feedback request from the USA 7s media people. Imagine wanting to find out what your customers think, what a novel idea. These people are class as was their treatment of the press and their media facilities, this event is going to grow in leaps and bounds. I've been to Twickenham and Millennium Stadium as press and this was just as professional albeit on a lot smaller scale. It completely blows out of the water anything I've experienced before in North America from a rugby media perspective.

Women Athletes and Funding

A reader sent in this article about funding or the lack of it for Women Athletes. It's written from an Olympic point of view but mentions rugby as well. One of the reasons is it's written by Stephen Hume of the Vancouver Sun who has deep rugby roots. His brother John (the smarter and better looking brother I might add) was the past president of the Velox Valhallians rugby club. OK I just added that last comment in parenthesis to get a free beer on Thursday night.

All joking aside it is a valid issue as the women continually outperform the men but receive a fraction of the funding.

RGC 1404

For those following the carded players in North Wales here is some information. RGC 1404 defeated Worcester Academy or Worcester A (they seem to use the term synonymously) by a score of 20-11. The last time these teams met at Parc Eirias (RGC 1404 home field) the Worcester A team won 72-3. That fact seems to indicate that Canada is indeed helping North Wales improve its rugby quality, the big question remains unanswered, is North Wales helping Canada improve its rugby quality. The answer no doubt this summer when Canada, for the first time, bolstered by the North Wales contingent will win the Churchill Cup. I bet Geraint is already working on the press release.

Churchilll Cup

Speaking of Churchill Cup, the pools and venues were announced yesterday. For the second year in the row, the tournament is being held exclusively south of the border. That’s a bit of a troubling trend from a Canadian perspective as there’s no explanation on the decision to hold it exclusively in the USA. Did Rugby Canada not want it, did the iRB mandate it, did the USA outbid us? I’ll fire off an email and see if I can get an answer. The tournament started in 2003 in Vancouver, then Alberta for two years, then shared between USA/Canada in 2006, then to England, back to a shared arrangement in 2008, and now exclusively held in the USA for 2009 and 2010.

A few things to update readers on. Comments to editor@bcrugbynews.com

New 7s Sponsor

Rugby Canada is to announce a new 7s sponsor tomorrow and our intel indicates it's Macquarie Financial. They already have a sponsorship agreement with RC for age grade programs as announced in Feb 2009. Here is the link to that press release. Macquarie are an Australian company that have been operating in Canada since the late '90s. It would be nice to know exactly how much has being put into the age grade system since February or how much is involved in the 7s package. Is it a substantial amount or just an announcement with everyone patting themselves on the back but little money passing hands. Call me a cynic but I would like to know the numbers before applauding.

FVRU U17 Defeat Canada U17 [from Erin Ferguson]

Played before a crowd of about 250 people on a moderate spring day, oops warm winter day. The conditions were perfect with no rain and although the field was a little muddy both teams played some good wide open rugby. Canada scored first with a try but the FVRU battled back to win 19-18. Young scrum half Riley Locker (Bayside) had a spectacular day from the scrum half position for the FVRU.

Lost Keys?

Hi Mark,

I'm just sending you an email because I found some keys on 16th and Discovery play fields where some rugby guys were playing. They seem like important keys (for important or hi-tech entry).

If you have any way to let the teams know that play out there, that would be great. Or, if you can forward this message to someone who can pass on the message, please do.

DTH Scores First Magner's League Try; Canadian 7s (Maple Leafs) Ready for Two Pool Games on Sunday in Uruguay

[ed. comments below]
posted January 2 2010

While the BC season waits for February to launch into full action there are some BC and former BC based players who are in the thick of rugby action. DTH van der Merwe scored his first Magners League try in Glasgow's 22-15 victory over Scottish rivals Edinburgh. The full report can be read on the BBC site.

Also the informal Canadian team known as the Maple Leafs and funded by local donations put through the Canadian Rugby Foundation is in Uruguay to play in the Punta del Este tournament starting tomorrow (January 3rd). If your spanish is good you'll be able to read the match updates at http://www.7punta.com/.

Canada has two pool games on Day 1 playing Carrasco Polo at 21:40 local time and then Toyota VII at midnight. Carrasco Polo is a local Uruguyan team and Toyota 7 look to be a Barbarian type team. Samoa won the tournament last year and will be the favourites again this year along with Argentina, Italy and Tonga. Canada should go through the pool rounds unscathed before meeting sterner opposition on Day 2.

Temperatures should hit a sunny high of 28C on Sunday with a more temperate 26C and rain on Monday for the finals. The evening start times will no doubt provide a more comfortable playing environment.
