USA Red 22 v Canada White 10

The first try came for USA at the 20 minute mark when sustained pressure turned into points. Canada were pinned inside their 22 for an extended period of time, they had a 5 metre lineout which they won but the clearing kick from in goal was blocked and then fell on for an easy 5. The conversion was missed.

Five turned into ten a few minutes later when a penalty for coming in from the side on a ruck gave the USA an attacking lineout 10 metres out from Canada's line. A few passes later they cut through the Canadian defence in the midfield and were over again. Again conversion missed, 10-0.

At 35 minutes Canada had a good chance to score with prolonged pressure inside the USA 22 and were just metres away from the goal line but the referee called the ball carrier for holding on and USA cleared.

Canada did manage to score just before the half when a penalty at the USA 22 was quick tapped and Canada ran it to the 5 metre line, then the #10 did some ducking and weaving and then powered over the line, a nice solo effort to finish off the play. 10-5 for USA at the half.

The Americans started the second half strong with a try about 3 minutes in, the result of some tentative tackling by Canada as it looked like many subs were introduced at half time. The conversion was good, 17-5 for USA.

It became 22-5 after Canada picked up a scrum penalty, a note that the body position of the tighthead prop was poor and hopefully the coaches are making full use of the plentiful expertise in that area, a session with Gary Dukelow comes to mind. USA botched the subsequent lineout but Canada handed it right back with some clumsy handling. The USA first receiver (no number) floated a beautiful pass to the wing who beat the defence which had pinched in.

#22 scored Canada's 2nd try, a strong run from 10 metres out as he dipped his shoulder into a smaller defender and evaded the tackle. Final whistle, 22-10 for USA.

Looking at the areas for improvement, speed to the breakdown by the support players is one obvious area - then the basics of ball handling and tackling. It was positive to see some players show good defensive speed off the line, and there were some strong individual ball carriers.

USA Blue 40 v Canada Red 13

In this match the USA scored within the first minute as the Canadian team didn't look prepared for the intensity. The Americans brought a lot of physicality that the Canadian players didn't seem ready for. Add in the fact the ref seemed a bit out of his depth and on a learning path and this was going to be a long afternoon. The second try pretty well summed it up the Canadian player went into contact, seemed to be on the ground, the ball was ripped out of his arms and the American winger picked it up and ran untouched from almost half way. It was still close at the half 14-3 but USA would add 26 2nd half points to 10 for Canada.

The teams are in action again on Monday.
