Canada U20 Team Boarding Plane to Portugal - Matches vs Portugal, Spain, France
We ran the initial U20 tour report back on January 9th and like most people forgot about it until we noticed a line in the BCRU 7s report stating that Adam Roberts was off on Canada U20 duties.
Here's the initial report to refresh your memory - Canada U20 Squad Selected for Tour to Portugal and Spain Feb 13-25
We made a few calls, sent a few emails and can confirm the tour is underway. There are two full games planned against Portugal, dates to be confirmed. Also shortened games versus Spain and France, again dates to be confirmed.
In the larger picture the JWRT qualification matches against the USA will be held in Canada this year. The camp will take place from May 13th to June 5th at Shawnigan Lake School. The first match will be May 31st in Abbotsford, that's the Friday of the BC High School finals tournament. The BC High School finals will be Wednesday May 29, Thursday, May 30, and Saturday, June 1. It's a great idea to have the aspiring U20 players view the match and support Canada. The second match is scheduled for Shawnigan Lake School on Tuesday June 4th.
If you want to support the Canada U20 team financially you can do so through the Canadian Rugby Foundation U20 Support Group Fund.
This fund makes it possible to prepare the U20 team through tours and early camps. The U20 Support Group operates separately but in co-operation with Rugby Canada. Members of the group are Dr. Pat Parfrey, Mike Holmes, Andrew Purdey, David Robertson and Bill Webb.
An interesting bit of trivia that you can add to your rugby knowledge. Two members of the U20 Support Group played in the UK in the 70s on opposite teams, one for Saracens as openside flanker and one for London Irish as flyhalf. You can add your guesses in the comments section, we'll reveal the answer tomorrow.
Answer Pat Parfrey was playing flyhalf for London Irish and David Robertson was playing openside flanker for Saracens.
