Westshore Match Reports: Wins in Men's and Women's Premier Over Lomas and Burnaby
by Clancy McDonnell
Westshore's Velox Valhallians returned after several cancelled fixtures with a resounding win at Connaught Park on Saturday, taking a massive lead into half time that would prove unassailable.
The VVs opened the first half brightly, and quickly opened up a sizeable lead. With the back row particularly prominent in attack, they bustled through tackles and made good offloads to well-placed support. The Meraloma defence couldn’t scramble well enough, and before you knew it a bonus point had been earned for tries scored.
The second half was more evenly balanced, as the home side dug deep, made some tackles and played a bit of rugby themselves. There was still some good carrying and shape to the VVs game, but the door had closed on easy scores.
Coach Aaron Frisby, smarting from sticking his thumb somewhere it didn’t belong, was obviously pleased with the result. “I’m really happy for the guys and how things clicked - playing after getting off the ferry is never as easy as at home. We're gunning for a place in the playoffs, and I see this game as the first big step towards that goal”.
Premier Reserve: WRFC 21 – Meraloma 18
The 2nd XV had probably their finest result of the year with a hard-won victory over the top of the table, and thus far undefeated, Meraloma team. The VVs scored three converted tries, and held out against the Lomas despite a lopsided penalty count and three yellow cards.
Women’s Premier: WRFC 75 – BLRC 0
The Valkyries continued their unbeaten run, playing a makeup fixture worth double points against Burnaby Lake (although they played at UBC). It was a lopsided affair, saying something about the ongoing strength of the Valkyries program and something about the rebuilding phase of the Burnaby team.
The 3rd Division team played as well, beating the Comox Kickers 27-19. Coming up, the men’s teams are playing a makeup game at home this Thursday against the Castaway Wanderers. Kick-offs at 6:15 and 7:45 p.m. Also coming up on Saturday, 16th March is the annual Westshore whiskey tasting fundraiser
. There’s whiskey and an auction.
