Tropical 7s Update: How Did the Canadian Teams Fare?

With the national U18 7s abandoned this year and the national university 7s downgraded more to a regional tournament. It's time to see where Canadian development teams are playing. One of the first major tournaments was the Tropical 7s in Florida. Unfortunately we don't have the team rosters so can't track the players, if you have a team roster, use the comment section below to post it.

In the men's U23/University division Quebec won the tournament, congrats to them. The only other Canadian team in that division were the Celtic Barbarians touring side and they finished 3rd. The American touring side Stars Rugby 7s came second.

In the women's U23/University Elite division it was two top USA University sides coming first and second, Life University and Lindenwood. Guelph University came 4th.

In the women's U23/University Open division, it was Celtic Barbarians claiming top honours, congrats to them. They were the only Canadian side in the competition.

In the girls U18 NAHS Division, the top U18 division, it was Atlantis from the USA claiming top spot with Celtic Barbarians claiming second, only losing the final by 2 points. Upright Rugby from Ontario finished 3rd and Green & Gold Academy from Alberta finished 6th.

In the girls U18 Open Division, it was Ontario claiming Gold and Celtic Barbarians claiming Silver, Nova Scotia Bronze and Quebec 4th place.

In the boys U18 NAHS Division, the top U18 division, it was EIRA (Eagle Impact Rugby Academy) from the USA winning. They won Vegas as well. Atlantis came second. The top Canadian side was Upright Rugby who came fourth, BC came 5th. It was the only side BC sent to the tournament.

In the boys U18 Elite Division, below NAHS but above Open, it was Stars Rugby 7s with top spot, Green and Gold Academy from Alberta second and Canadian Misfits from Ontario third.

In the boys U18 Open Division, it was EORU (Eastern Ontario) winning top spot, Ontario second and Saskatchewan third.

In the boys U16, two USA sides Atlantis and Gorilla Rugby took #1 and #2, Oakville Crusaders from Ontario took 3rd.

In the girls U16, it was Ontario first and Celtic Barbarians 2nd.

In the boys U14, it was USA Rugby South 1st and Celtic Barbarians 2nd.

The Celtic Barbarians overall represented Western Canada well claiming top spot in the women's U23 Open; 2nd place in boys U14, girls U16, girls U18 open, girls U18 NAHS; 3rd place in men's U23.

Canadian Youth 7s Teams Heading to Orlando April 19-20 for Tropical 7s

What is the current trend for youth rugby 7s development? This year the national U18 7s tournament was cancelled. Privately run academies and touring sides are picking up the slack. The Tropical 7s in Florida is coming up later this month and there are a number of Canadian teams entered.

The tournament is held on 8 fields at the Omni Championsgate Resort in Orlando. It's not hard to figure out the allure of Orlando in April for coaches, parents and players.

The tournament has U23, U18, U16 and U14 divisions. Who are the Canadian teams at the tournament?

Celtic Barbarians

Cam Wilton from Alberta figures prominently in this touring side. They recruit players from across North America with a large Canadian contingent. They have put together a top coaching staff going to the tournament and are entering 11 teams altogether.

Upright Rugby

Tyler Leggatt from the Toronto area runs this academy and they have 3 teams entered in the U18 divisions. Tyler also coaches the North American Lions teams entered into elite international 7s tournaments.

Canadian Misfits

Nigel D'Acre who was Damian's Maple Leaf coach last tour to South America is prominent in this touring side. They have 2 teams entered in Boys U18 Elite and Girls U14.

Some provincial teams from Canada include BC, Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, PEI. Some Canadian club teams include Crusaders, Toronto Reds, Toronto Saracens, Brantford. University sides include Guelph and the Green and Gold Academy which we're assuming is University of Alberta.

Here is the full list of teams, we'll follow the Canadian teams during the tournament and post results. If you have any information you want to share on the Canadian teams entered, you can email editor@bcrugbynews.com
