Canadian University Select Team to Face USA All American Collegiate Team in Glendale the Week of Canada v USA Test

A Canada vs USA University/College match will take place the week of the Canada v USA senior men's game, the men's game is on July 27th in Glendale.

It's interesting timing as the winner of the Canada v USA U20 matches in June will be in Brazil representing North America at the Junior World Rugby Trophy tournament from July 9 to 21.

Gethin Watts is the technical lead, Jeff Chan organizing from the CUMRC perspective with the Canadian Rugby Foundation providing funding.

They're currently looking for a head coach for the team, details listed below.

2019 & 2020 All American Collegiate vs. All Canadian University Men's 15 Matches

Final touches are being made to a Memorandum of Understanding between USA Rugby and Rugby Canada/Canadian Rugby Foundation/Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship to hold two Men's 15's games in 2019 and 2020, pitting an All American Collegiate team versus an All Canadian University team for North American bragging rights.

The first game will be held in Glendale, Colorado the week of July 23-28 in conjunction with the July 27 Canada vs. USA Senior Men's 15's match. USA Rugby has committed to pay the ground logistical costs (primarily accommodation and meals) for the Canadian team, to a maximum of $US 20,000.

The second will be held on a date and in a location in Canada still to be determined in the summer of 2020. The Canadian Rugby Foundation, supported by the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship will reciprocate with funding for the USA team's ground costs to the same maximum.

More details are being developed under the leadership of Gethin Watts from Rugby Canada, and will be posted here (and emailed to ADs and Coaches) as they become available. In both years, players and coaches will pay to play/coach including travel costs, plus domestic ground costs. We will be trying to fund more of these costs through sponsorships, donations and fund-raising, but participants should be prepared to shoulder a part of the load.

A job description for the Head Coach of the Canadian team is attached. We will need to accelerate the search for this coach, as one of the key responsibilities will be to help select the team - from a pool of available All Stars from the 2018 Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship, complemented by additional outstanding university men's rugby players from across Canada who were not in Victoria last November. Rugby Canada through its talent development and ID group and its U20 program, and the CUMRC Advisory Committee of coaches will assist in this selection process.

If you are interested, please send a CV and cover letter (and questions) to Gethin Watts at by May 27.
