Canada U18 vs USA U18 - July 10 2019

Canada Drop Final Match to USA 46-43: MATCH VIDEO

Canada had only managed 7 points in each of the previous matches so their output of 43 points was a positive, the USA had a strong second half and scored 46 winning the game in the last minute.

Ciaran Breen had a strong game at fullback for Canada, first try for Canada was second row Artmann Sherren, 7-0. USA replied to go up 12-7 before Ciaran Breen showed his skill cutting through the USA defence and eventually receiving the return pass to cross the line 14-12 for Canada. Breen setup the next try as well finished off by winger Storm Buck, 21-12. USA got one back before half 21-19. Just at the half Canada prop Willem den Ouden finished off prolonged pressure inside the US 5 metres for a half time score of 26-19 to Canada.

Canada started well in the second half with inside centre Liam Bowman breaking a tackle to score near the posts 33-19. The teams then exchanged tries for a 40-24 scoreline. Canada's try was by Ryan Goodyear a player off the bench playing out wide, he stepped inside a floating pass to intercept and run the length of the field. There were 20 minutes left and Canada had a 16 point lead, things were looking good for the home side.

USA would up their attack, the scoreline went to 40-29 then 40-34 then 40-39 before Canada took 3 points on a penalty kick 43-39 but US weren't finished and scored a fourth consecutive try with a minute left for a 46-43 final.

Canada will be pleased with their improved offensive display but disappointed with their defence in the last quarter.

Canada and USA Rosters for Today's U18 Match at Brentwood College @ 5pm

The USA have had the upper hand in the trial matches, the best players have been identified on both sides and today's match is the full test. The USA won match #1 24-7 and match #2 27-7. One of their standout players has been #8 Ethan Howard, a big unit with pace.

One of Canada's problem areas has been ball handling and unforced errors, today they hope to improve their finishing skills and turn more possession into points.

The match is to be streamed on the Rugby Canada facebook page starting at 5pm.

Canada Drop Game #2 to Americans 25-7 (20-7 HT) - Almost Identical Score to Game #1

We didn't see game #1 (24-7) but the scorelines were almost identical. The number of handling errors from Canada was astounding and even though they had enough possession they lacked finishing skills. It was drizzling throughout the match which made the ball greasy but the Americans were clinical in their ball handling and were able to finish their chances.

The American #8, Ethan Howard, was the best player on the field. He scored a solo first half try which was started inside his own half as he outpaced all Canadian defenders. He's one to watch, a big man with pace will find a spot at the elite level. He frequently drew in a couple of Canadian defenders when he had the ball as one defender rarely got the job done.

Photos of the match can be viewed on our Twitter account.

The final match will be streamed on Rugby Canada's facebook page, according to Rugby Canada. It will be Sunday at 5pm.

Canada vs USA Series at Brentwood College Resumes Tomorrow for Game #2

[ed. games are at 5pm.]

While the U18 7s are getting some press at the Great North 7s being held in Ontario, in BC at Brentwood College the U18 XVs are quietly hosting the USA for 3 matches. The first match took place July 7th and the USA took that one 24-7. The next one is tomorrow (July 10th) and the final match is on Sunday, July 14th. The first two matches are billed as trial matches where players from both teams are evaluated and then Sunday the best players are put on the field for an international.

The list below is the roster from Game #1, we haven't seen the roster for Game #2 yet [ed. updated with Game #2 rosters below]. Some interesting names in the roster. Campbell Clarke travelled with the Canada U20 team last year but was left off this year with Brock Webster the starting #10 but look for Campbell Clarke to feature next year as he gains more experience. Another late cut from the U20 program was Alistair Bulman from the UK, invited to camp but didn't travel with the team, another one to watch over the next couple years at the U20 level. Jacob Bourne, son of Rick Bourne, is a talented player who has helped the UBCOB Ravens age grade program excel in recent years, often playing #10 but playing #15 in this match. Logan Weidner another one to watch from the Capilano Rugby Club and Carson Graham high school.

We'll have more updates after Wednesday's match with photos. The Sunday match is supposed to be streamed live on Rugby Canada's facebook page.
