Gethin Watts Takes Bristol Job, Namibia Defeat Southern Kings, European Academies Yes or No, BC Premier Predictions Contest

Gethin Watts to Bristol

Gethin Watts who has been guiding the Canada development structure these last couple of seasons as a consultant has taken on a job with the Bristol Bears and now will be watching Canadian rugby from a distance. He was previously the National Performance Manager at the Welsh Rugby Union until August 2017. His job at Bristol is senior Academy Manager. The press release from Bristol Bears is linked below, you won't find any mention of his role at Canadian rugby in the article though - likely not a bragging point in pro rugby circles these days.

Namibia Defeat Southern Kings in RWC Warmup

Canada's best bet for a win at RWC 2019 is Namibia, it will be Canada's last match of the tournament. Namibia came from behind a 22-7 deficit and scored 3 tries in the last 10 minutes to finish 28-22 winners over the Southern Kings. The teams have a rematch this weekend.

European Academies Yes or No

It was a given that if you had a shot at a European academy you jumped on it but now we're hearing some people questioning the wisdom of that automatic decision. So it was interesting to read this article in the Guardian talking about toxic cultures and the effect it can have on developing players. We've seen Canadian players go and come back with varying degrees of success. We remember one promising former Canada U20 player, Conor McCann from Balmy Beach and James Bay, who went to the Clermont Academy and then disappeared from national view (he's not to be confused with Connor McCann the loose forward currently playing with Meraloma).

BC Premier Predictions Contest

As usual we'll be doing our Friday afternoon article on predicting the weekend's BC Premier matches. This year we're planning to shake it up a bit. Aaron Takel, the BC men's development manager, has agreed to pit his prognostication skills against the Editor's and we'll keep score for the season. We're looking for one or two more pundits to enter the "friendly" competition. All you have to do is submit your predictions and a sentence or two backing them up by Friday afternoon. If you're in for the season then email editor@bcrugbynews.com to let us know. Here are the upcoming matches for Saturday to start the season, always the most difficult weekend to predict with no previous form to go on.
