Youth 7s Tournament Attracts Over 70 Teams From Across the Province: Day 1 Results

The full results are on the BCRU website, we'll just summarize and look at the top teams in each division.

U14 Girls

Abbotsford and CW look to be the top teams in this division. We're not sure who the individual coaches are of the teams but two big influencers in those clubs over the last several years (or more) in women's rugby have been Jen Ross for Abby and David Crossley for CW. It sometimes just takes one really committed individual with the necessary skill set to move a program along and get other talented individuals involved. Congrats to both programs and their respective coaching staffs.

U16 Girls

Kootenay have been running up some impressive scores 34-7 over CW, 29-5 over Capilano, 39-0 over Bayside. The Kootenay high school girls won the Tier 2 Gold this year at the BC high school championship tournament. One outstanding player is Summer Blackmore who was on the radar of national 7s coach John Tait.

U16 Girls Elite

Only 6 teams in this competition and two Alberta teams are doing well. Calgary Mavericks defeating Abbotsford and CW. Also the Celtic Barbarians, based in Alberta but drawing players from across western Canada are undefeated.

U19 Girls

An impressive 16 teams entered here, a good sign for this age group. Williams Lake are 3-0 on Day 1 as are Capilano. United have two teams entered and their #2 side are undefeated on Day 1.

U19 Girls Elite

Calgary Mavericks again look strong with a 3-0 record but the win against Kamloops was just 2 points. There looks to be a lot of parity in this division with 7 teams battling it out.

U15 Boys

Sevens teams in this division with James Bay looking strong at 3-0. The St. Albert team is 2-1 with their only loss to JBAA.

U17 Boys

A healthy 12 teams entered in this division. The TORA team from the Okanagan look strong, posting three shutout wins. Bayside are also 3-0 as are Calgary Mavericks.

U19 Boys

Sevens teams vying for the title. A bit disappointing there are no lower mainland or island teams in this division. There are four Alberta teams, Okanagan, Kootenay, Kamloops. Kootenay and the Clansmen from Edmonton posting clean records on Day 1.
