BCSSRU Coaching Clinic Wrapup: 75 High School and Club Coaches Attended Events

Two BC Secondary Schools Rugby Union (BCSSRU) Coaches clinics have come and gone, with Shawnigan Lake School and Clarence Fulton SS the sites for recent October 25 Professional Development opportunities.

BCSSRU Commissioner Walter van Halst was delighted with the inaugural clinics, pointing to the 75 high school and club coaches in attendance. "There was a real energy at both events" he noted. "Sincere thanks to the two host schools, their respective staffs, the organizers and, of course, to the presenters."

Indeed, van Halst was able to call upon numerous high level coaches to lead sessions on scrumming, kicking, ball in contact, handling, decision making and counterattack . This group included UBC bench boss Curry Hitchborn, new Pacific Pride head man Jamie Cudmore, in addition to, among others, current and former Canadian internationals Laura Russell, Ray Barkwill, Jeff Williams and Ander Monro. BC Development manager Aaron Takel also played a key role in delivering important World Rugby player safety initiatives, and will be further instrumental in linking the two clinics to areas of play set to be discussed at the BCRU Jamboree in mid January.

The weather proved to be the only tricky issue on the day. In the Okanagan, lead organizer Stephen Rowell faced a real mixture of conditions, with wind, rain and then some snow forcing sessions indoors for a short while before the skies cleared. At Shawnigan, a beautiful, calm day was at total odds with fierce winds that cancelled ferries and made for some interesting return trips to the Mainland for a number of visiting coaches.

Van Halst plans for the clinics to become an annual affair, with "coaches sharing ideas, techniques and tactics to improve the level of age grade play across the province."

BCSSRU Holds Two High Level Coaching Clinics, Friday, October 25th, 2019

On Friday, October 25, the British Columbia Secondary Schools Rugby Union (BCSSRU) will host two high level coaching clinics. The date coincides with the fall province-wide Professional Development Day in secondary schools.

BCSSRU Commissioner Walter van Halst has been the driving force behind the clinics, with an aim to galvanize coaches and programs in advance of the 2020 school season. These clinics came about after consultations this summer with coaches on both Vancouver Island and in the Okanagan and will therefore take place at Shawnigan Lake School and at Clarence Fulton Secondary School in Vernon. “Hopefully, we can gain some early momentum,” he stated. “The clinics will be a first step in what we believe will be a banner year for high school rugby.”

The Commissioner was quick to praise the contributions and support of the Administration and Coaching Staff of both Shawnigan Lake School and Clarence Fulton Secondary School. “Both have really stepped up to provide their facilities, expertise and equipment. We are especially indebted to Tim Murdy, Jeff Williams, Shannon Atkins and Ander Monro of Shawnigan Lake School and to Mike Scheller of Clarence Fulton who will handle all the onsite requirements at their respective schools.

Significantly, presenters at the two clinics include some of the finest coaches in British Columbia. New Pacific Pride boss and Rugby Canada stalwart Jamie Cudmore and the UBC Thunderbirds’ Curry Hitchborn will headline the Okanagan event, while Canadian internationals Ander Monro, Ray Barkwill, Jeff Williams, Ian Hyde-Lay and Laura Russell, among others, will feature at Shawnigan.

Itineraries and presenters are posted below. Admission is open to all school and club coaches in BC and few places remain available at both locations. If you have not already registered and wish to do so, late registration is only $ 25 and includes lunch. For the clinic on Vancouver Island, contact Ian Hyde-Lay at ian.hydelay@smus.ca and for the clinic in the Okanagan, contact Stephen Rowell at stephen.rowell61@gmail.com. Finally, van Halst concluded his remarks by acknowledging the additional support of BCRU Development Manager Aaron Takel, noting that the “second part of the BCSSRU coaching development plan will dovetail with the annual BCRU conference in early January. “
