UBC Defeat Lomas 34-10 to Claim Top Spot in BC Premier Table: MATCH VIDEO
In chilly weather the UBC forwards got the job done with a dominant scrum and a smothering defence. UBC scored first from a maul, then traded penalties for a 8-3 scoreline. UBC had more opportunities to score but their handling let them down on more than one occasion. They eventually crossed the line again when the winger came inside to run off the shoulder of the flyhalf and it was 15-3. The half ended with that scoreline.
Nick Allen came in at #19 to play 8th man while #8 Mike Smith went to blindside flanker. Those two teamed up for the next score off a quick tap penalty, 22-3. Nick Allen did it solo for the next try picking it up at the back of a 5 metre scrum, 29-3.
Lomas got a try from a maul, 29-10. UBC finished it off with a chip to the corner which was pounced upon by winger Evan Norris, for his second and a 34-10 final.
For UBC Nick Allen, Michael Smith, the front row were key components to the win. The defensive line speed was excellent and gave the Lomas few attacking opportunities, the tackling was solid. The ball handling in the backline was pretty poor and the back three looked tentative when handling clearance kicks. For the Lomas their #8 and #10 stood out, #8 having some strong runs and #10 showing some strong tactical kicking skills.
The win puts UBC at the top of the table with Burnaby 3 points behind. The Lomas remain tied with Westshore for 10th place with 12 points.

The BC Premier league is getting off to an early and perhaps tentative start as, at the time of writing, there still hasn't been 100% confirmation the match is going ahead. The decision rests with Thunderbird Stadium facilities management apparently. If the match goes ahead there might even be a live stream, stay tuned for details.
Next weekend sees the full return of the BC Premier schedule.
