Lucas Hammond Juggles Busy Schedule as National Team Rugby Player and Residential Real Estate Agent

We had a chance to catch up with Canada 7s player Lucas Hammond and talk about his new real estate career while he continues his rugby career with the national 7s team on the road to the Olympics.

Lucas picked up rugby in South Africa where he was born. His parents were Canadian missionaries for 16 years in Uganda and South Africa. He was born in Cape Town and started playing rugby in Vryheid, Kwazulu-Natal as his dad was keen to get him involved in local sports. When his family returned to Canada in 2006, Lucas was well ahead of the curve in skill development as a 13 year old rugby player. He often was slotted into the #10 position in XVs. He played club rugby for the Toronto Nomads and with Oakwood Collegiate in school rugby.

He was soon picked to play rep rugby for Ontario at the U16 to U18 levels and he remembers well the many battles with BC over the years. His first national selection was at the U17 level.

His first 7s tour was with the Howlers, the well known program run by Karl Fix out of Regina. He travelled with the Howlers to the Vegas tournament in 2011. That same year he was picked to represent Canada at the Junior Commonwealth Games under the coaching of Shane Thompson and Jeff Williams. A senior cap soon followed in November of that year at the Dubai 7s tournament while still 18 years of age.

Nine years later and Lucas has had to battle some adversity as he closes in on 50 caps. He had almost two years of intermittent playing time as he battled a recurring injury to a torn deltoid ligament in his foot. He persevered through that however and was part of the 2020 7s team that finished the COVID abbreviated season in Vancouver with a Bronze medal and 8th place overall in the standings.

The team has recently resumed training and now his days start at 6am with weights and field sessions. By 11am he's transitioned from pro rugby player to residential real estate agent. He started his real estate training in February and became licensed in November 2020. At 27 he's joining some past and present legends who operate in the real estate field in the Victoria area including Connor Braid, Harry Jones, Bobby Ross and Tom Woods.

We wish Lucas all the best in this new endeavour and if you wish to contact him, give him a call at 250-634-4088, email at lucas.hammond@evrealestate.com and website at lucashammond.ca
