from BCRU

BC Rugby is delighted to announce Doug Tate as its new Coach Education Manager.

As Coach Education Manager, Tate will report to the Technical Director and deliver educational and development opportunities throughout BC to increase the quantity and quality of certified Rugby coaches in the province. Tate will work collaboratively with Rugby Canada.

“I’m really looking forward to this new role in developing rugby coaches in BC. I was lucky to have some great people over the years support me at every level and believe their mentoring made a big difference on how I approached coaching.” Doug Tate

“We are delighted to welcome Doug to the BC Rugby team. His incredible contribution to the sport over the past 40 years has been fundamental to the success of the University of Victoria and Canadian national team programs. His expertise and commitment will be essential in developing the quality of coaching throughout the province.” BC Rugby CEO Annabel Kehoe

Tate recently retired after 27 years as Head Coach of the University of Victoria Men’s Rugby program.

Following a highly decorated career spanning over 40 years, Tate was the recipient of the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) Sport Leadership Awards Gala.

Tate’s distinguished coaching career and experience made him the leading candidate for this position. During his tenure as Vikes head coach, Tate amassed successive Canadian University titles in 1997 and 1998 and led the team to BC Rugby Premier Division titles in 2003 and 2010. The Vikes won the University National Championships under Tate in 2019.

Alongside his role with the Vikes, Tate was integral to the success of Canada’s Rugby teams on the international stage and helped numerous Vikes go on to represent the national team. He was Head of Canada’s Senior Men’s Sevens team for five years between 1997 and 2002, and Technical Director for the national Men’s Sevens team between 2005 and 2010. Tate also coached Canada at three Commonwealth Games.

BC Rugby thanks all candidates for their applications in consideration for this role.
