BC Premier Week 9 Results & Rosters: Pride Edged by Ravens, Caps Top CW, UVic Fall to Seattle, Lomas Defeat Bays, UBC Paddle Rowers, Burnaby Cruise Past Westshore
[ed. note some of these results are from the BCRU, there may be errors.]
A note on location changes this weekend, unfortunately the city parks board wouldn't give the west side clubs Meralomas, Kats and Ravens permits for this weekend. Lomas have moved their Premier game to Bayside and Ravens have moved their game to Langley.
UBCOB Ravens 33 v Pacific Pride 26 @14:30 Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Saro Turner AR2: John Cameron Venue: Crush Crescent - Langley
We called Ravens by 6 and it was Ravens +7. The result puts the Ravens in 2nd place behind UBC, possibly two teams that will meet in the final. We look forward to Peter MacDonald's report. Next week the Ravens visit Westshore on the Island and the Pride play the Rowers, that match is listed for Exhibition Park in Abbotsford.
PREGAME #3 Ravens hosting #4 Pacific Pride. Probably the game of the week. The Ravens are missing their regular starting tighthead, Tom Kaijaks, and Cole Keffer isn't starting on the wing, those are the only changes for them. The Pride are missing Matt Klimchuk and D'Shawn Bowen. Zephyr Melnyk moves from openside to cover #8. James Thiel gets the start at #10 and Sam Wegert gets the start at outside centre. JC Vinette and Alan Berros are the starting wingers.
The Ravens haven't lost a match this season, just the default loss, so they'll go in as favourites. But will the loss of home field and moving the match to Langley be a factor? Prediction: Ravens by 6.

Capilano 29 v Castaway Wanderers 26 @14:30 Referee: Riley Robinson AR1: Bradley Schwalger AR2: Mark Abercrombie Venue: Klahanie Park
We called Caps by 1 and it was Caps +3. Lots of bonus points in the match which keep Capilano and CW in the playoff hunt. Capilano are in 8th with 20 points and CW in 9th with 19 points, they're chasing JBAA in 7th with 22 points. Next week Capilano visit James Bay in a key match while CW host Seattle.
PREGAME #9 Capilano hosting #8 CW. An important match for two teams chasing a playoff spot. There's some confusion around the Premier playoffs, the BCRU aren't great at communicating these details. Normally in the BC Premier the top 6 teams enter the playoffs, #1 and #2 get byes to the semi-final and 3v6 and 4v5 are the quarter-finals. The BCRU website is currently showing a 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 playoff format on their schedule page. We've asked the BCRU for clarification.
CW gave #1 UBC a tough battle last week with a strong showing by the front row, Capilano narrowly edged Burnaby with a clutch penalty kick. It looks like a close match, will the home crowd be the difference? Prediction: Caps by 1.
CW 1 John Braddock 2 Jace Peters 3 Jake Ilnicki 4 John Humphries 5 Riley Ilnicki 6 Mike Finnemore 7 Steve Pyke 8 Nick Carson 9 Brandon Schellenberger 10 Gareth Sandner 11 Gabriel Smith 12 Matt Sutherland 13 Ollie Nott 14 James Mitchell 15 Zech Pilgrim 16 Denver Fatt 17 Gavin Kratz 18 Jack Sponarski 19 Cam Sandison 20 Michael Smith 21 James Duguid 22 Dexter Anderson 23 Joe Massyn

Seattle 29 v University Of Victoria 17 @13:00 Referee: Visiting Referee 1 Venue: Chuckanut
We got this one wrong and should have listened to our gut, Seattle at home are a stronger team. The result drops Vikes to 4th place in the standings, Seattle remain in 10th place with 18 points. Next week UVic host Burnaby in a key match and Seattle visit CW.
PREGAME #10 Seattle hosting #2 UVic. Seattle are always stronger at home and pushed the Ravens in their head to head match, the Ravens only winning by a point. The Vikes have only lost two games this season. Seattle aren't eligible for the playoffs as they could only field one team this season, but they'll want to put on a good show for the home crowd. Should be a close match. Prediction: Vikes by 3.

Meraloma 54 v James Bay AA 24 @14:30 Referee: Benjamin Lambrick AR1: Brett Hay AR2: Tere Blake Venue: South Surrey Athletic Park
Another one we got wrong and it's difficult to judge the playing strength of these two teams. The Lomas still don't have their roster posted so we're going blind on the lineup. They do look like a team that may cause an upset in the playoffs, they currently sit in 3rd spot. Next week the Lomas visit UBC which should be a good contest and the Bays host Capilano.
PREGAME #5 Meraloma hosting #6 James Bay. Another matchup with two teams close in the standings. The Bays coming off two losses and the Lomas a loss and a draw. Both teams started the season strongly but both have leveled off a bit. There's also the disruption of losing home field for the Lomas and moving the match to Bayside. The main change for the Bays is Shea Wakefield starting at #8. The Lomas don't have their roster published at the time of writing.
A toss up but we'll go with the team that has a current roster. Prediction: Bays by 1.
Meraloma (previous roster) 1 Mark Rickard 2 Corne Ludick 3 Pat Zuk 4 Jim Mulvany 5 Fintan O'Sullivan 6 Evan Galvin 7 John Willis 8 Jalan Farris 9 Tommy Viljoen 10 Monty Weatherall 11 Keith Graham 12 Jay Younger 13 Jad Hamade 14 Dewi Williams 15 Louis Whelan 16 Scott McGinley 17 Theo Espangol 18 Tom Dunne 19 Jacob Bourke 20 Thomas Williams 21 Darragh Foley 22 Ginga Ishii 23 D.W. Vancouver Rowing Club 10 v UBC 58 @14:30 Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Michael Moss AR2: JT ZHANG Venue: Brockton Oval
A lot to a little for UBC as expected, we conservatively said by 12, it was by +48. UBC remain in 1st, Rowers in 11th. UBC host Lomas next week which should be the game of the week while the Rowers visit the Pride in Abbotsford.
PREGAME #11 Rowers hosting #1 UBC. UBC have Matt Percillier back from the 7s program, Izzak Kelly is also back in the starting second row. A lot of talent across the roster. Rowers don't have their roster published at the time of writing. It should be an emphatic win by the #1 side. Prediction: UBC by 12.

Burnaby Lake 32 v Westshore 12 @16:00 Referee: David Smortchevsky AR1: Nathaniel Hight Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
No surprise here, we said Burnaby by 8 and it was Burnaby +20. The match video is posted below, and kudos to Burnaby for leading the league in live streaming. Burnaby rise to 6th place and Westshore remain in 12th. Next week Burnaby travel to UVic and Westshore host the Ravens.
PREGAME #7 Burnaby hosting #12 Westshore. Burnaby trying to maintain their playoff spot, a bonus point win could see them move up to 5th or 6th place. Westshore visiting with several Burnaby alumni, Vikilani x2 and Admir Cejvanovic, and looking for their first win of the season. Westshore have 5 bonus points in their losses so they have been competitive. Prediction: Burnaby by 8.
