BRITISH COLUMBIA SECONDARY SCHOOLS RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIPS

[ed. the link to the Girl's HS Championships is here: http://www.highschoolgirlsrugby.webs.com]
from David Speirs
posted May 26 2010

Once again this year, the British Columbia Secondary Schools Rugby Championships will open on a Saturday. Over 800 boys will participate in this tournament as the top 16 AA and AAA schools will start their quest for the Championship on Saturday, May 29th. There are three hubs being used to host the games across the province on the Saturday. These are St. George’s School, Vancouver, Brentwood College in Mill Bay and the Kamloops Rugby Park, Kamloops.

Following the first round match-ups the teams will reconvene on Wednesday, June 2nd for the remainder of the Championships. The reason for the split schedule is to insure adequate rest for the athletes between games rather than playing 4 games in 4 days, which was the old system.

Saturday, May 29 - First round games across the province
Wednesday, June 2 – Quarterfinals and placing games – Rotary Stadium and Fields, Abbotsford
Thursday, June 3 – Semifinals and placing games – Rotary Stadium and Fields, Abbotsford
Saturday, June 5 – Finals and placing games games – Rotary Stadium and Fields, Abbotsford

First Round Scores and Quarterfinal match-ups will be sent out on Sunday, May 30th.

Yale Continues Winning Ways: Lions 43 - Earl Marriott 0

posted March 24 2010
by Doug Primrose

The Yale Lions AAA Senior Boys rugby team defeated #6 Provincially ranked Earl Marriott 43-0. The Lions, who came in ranked 10th in the Province, began the scoring early when speedy winger Christian Styles raced down the sideline from 50 meters out to score under the posts. Scrum half Jared Johnston converted.

The Yale scoring continued when eighth-man Aaron Sawatsky joined in the backline attack and crashed over the line. The Yale defense was stifling, led by center Kris Baranowski who was making huge tackles all game. The forward pack dominated the rucks and were rewarded when hooker Aaron Vandale crossed the line for his 2nd try in as many games, which made the halftime score 24-0 in favour of the Lions. Yale knew they needed to keep the pressure on as Marriott is a side that can get back into the game very quickly.

The pressure was kept and Styles raced down the wing for his 2nd of the game. Fullback Odell Brown then added to the score when he came into the line with speed and scored under the posts. Yale's last try went to Baranowski, who deserved the reward for his huge work defensively all game. Johnston chipped in with 15 points on kicks. This win should move Yale up the BC rankings and are now 2-0 on the season.

Yale's AA team played a touring side from McMinneville, Oregon. Yale's undersized AA squad played well and came back to tie 24-24. Try scorers were Ken Presnilla, Mark Walker, Tyler Bridal, and Corbin Smith. Jesse Cotton converted two of the tries.

Yale Defeat #6 Ranked Robert Bateman in AAA

[ed. The BCSSRU update their rankings during the season, Yale is now ranked #10 and Robert Bateman dropped from the top 10]
posted March 22 2010
by Doug Primrose

The Yale Lions Senior boys rugby program began its season this past week with two games. Yale is running two squads this year, one in the AA league and one in the AAA. The AA played Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers and won 19-5. Caleb reardon scored two tries and Ken Presnilla got one. Jesse Cotton chipped in with two converts. The AA Lions had stifling defence and were able to play most of the game in the Panthers end of the field.

The following day the Lions AAA squad opened their regular season against East Abbotsford rival Robert Bateman Timberwolves. Last year, these two teams battled to a 22-22 draw and it is always exciting when these teams meet.

Bateman opened the scoring with a penalty kick to take the lead 3-0. Yale battled back though and chipped in with their own penalty kick by Jared Johnston. Yale then crossed the line for the first time this season with a great angle run from outside centre Joel Schmidt who scored between the posts to take an 8-3 lead. Yale was dominating the play with great ball retention from the big forward pack and solid defence. Their hard work was rewarded when winger Christian Styles passed the ball inside to centre Kris Baranowski who scored in the corner to take a 13-3 lead. However, Bateman was not done and due to great penalty kicking they were able to make the halftime score 13-9.

In the second half Yale began to roll and dominated the play. Eighth-man Aaron Sawatsky broke away and outran Bateman defenders to score in the corner. Then fullback Odell Brown crashed through the middle and carried over three defenders across the line to score under the posts, which Johnston converted. Hook Aaron Vandale, who was crashing the ball throughout the game, was rewarded when he took the ball over the line off of a penalty from 10 meters out. The final score by the Lions came from lock Alan Makarewicz, who was tackled, released the ball then took it again and ran across the line. Bateman was able to score their only try late in the game to make the final score 42-16 in favour of the Lions. Yale now face last year's Fraser valley Champions Earl Marriott Wednesday at Yale.
