BC Rugby Summer Updates

List of Summer Rugby Events in BC: Incentives for BC U20 Competition?

[ed. comments below]
posted May 25 2011

The following is a list compiled by the BCRU of summer rugby events, I've modified it a bit by adding Shawnigan Lake to the list of summer camps and indicating that the Victoria 7s is not a club 7s event but invitational only.

I'm particularly looking forward to the high profile 7s events like Abbotsford and Victoria 7s, also the first tournament of the season on June 11th, the Buccaneer 7s. The U20 competition intrigues me especially as our national U20 team are in action in Tbilisi, Georgia at the time of writing and are struggling, at least in their loss against Georgia (38-9). I think it's time to take a closer look at the talent in this age group. Even though there isn't a national championship this year at U20, I'm speculating that they'll start a U20 residential program in the fall of 2011 or spring of 2012 and there will be incentive to be noticed and selected for that program. Hopefully Coach Shelley will show some strong leadership upon his return from the World Trophy tournament and announce details of the residential program, and if not, at least indicate his vision for the U20 program and how he plans to reverse the Georgia result next year.

BC Rugby Prepresentative Season in Full Swing

While the Dunbar Keg Under 20 Competition has come to a close, and another successful Provincial Regional Championships and NWL season are in the books, the focus now turns to the following representative programs:

BC Bears Senior Men - looking to repeat as National Champions, will compete in the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC) starting August 14 in Calgary versus the Wolf Pack. On Saturday, August 21 the Bears will host the Atlantic Rock at 3:00 PM at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver (all details to follow soon!). The Bears will play in Toronto against the Ontario Blues on September 4. The top seed from this round-robin will host the second seed on September 18 for the right to hoist the 2010 CRC Cup.

Under 19 Women - will be competing against 8 other provincial sides at the 2010 National Championship Festival held in Calgary, Alberta where they will settle in from August 9 - 17.

Under 18 Men - will also be competing at the 2010 National Championship Festival in Calgary, departing August 12 and returning August 17. There are five provincial teams in the U18 division.

BC Under 17 Women - regionally the Under 17 Women will compete in the BC Summer Games in Langley from July 22-25. The Provincial side will be touring to California from August 11 - 18 where they will be looking to caputure the North American West Coast Championship.

Under 16 Men - to provide opportunity for more athletes, and in keeping with the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model two Under 16 Provincial sides will compete alongside the BC Under 18 Men and Under 19 Women at the 2010 National Championship Festival in Calgary. Competing at the BC Bruins and the BC Cubs, the two teams will have their final selection camp at Shawnigan Lake School, before heading to Calgary on August 11.

Under 14 Boys - as with the Under 16 Men, will have two sides competing in a National Festival with Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Under 14 athletes heading to the interprovincial festival in Calgary from August 14 - 18 will be selected from the 2010 BC Summer Games in Langley.
