Summer Rugby Camps

Summer Rugby Camps in Full Swing: A Visit to the Langford Rugby Camp

[ed. comments below]
posted July 11 2012

I had a chance to take in a few minutes at one of the local summer rugby camps for 8 to 14 year olds, hopefully this is a program that can be expanded in future years. Coincidentally this week I also received an email from an administrator of one of the First Nations bands asking about how they can get their youth involved in the BC U14 rugby program. They had read the article about the BC U14 team travelling to Ontario and were interested. Rugby has a lot of positives to offer for growing minds and bodies, it teaches respect, teamwork and reinforces the connection between hard work and rewards. Summer camps for youth is a great way to spread that message and introduce youth, parents and communities to the sport.

Rugby at the club level can be a little tribal but summer camps can also bridge that divide. This camp was run by Velox at Langford but showing up to sign autographs were national team players from James Bay and CW. It also shows the type of people involved with rugby as national team players volunteer time to be guest coaches or to sign autographs. On this day Barbara Mervin of the national Women’s team was guest coach, Marlene Donaldson also of the national Women’s team organized the camp. Showing up to sign T-shirts were Nanyak Dala, Sean White and John Moonlight. Running the drills was a recent arrival from Wales, Aled Price.

So if you’re feeling a bit jaded about rugby these days, the politics and inter-club squabbles, take a few minutes to take in a summer rugby camp. It may brighten your day.
