PREM: James Bay 20 @ Castaway Wanderers 7

The bonus point win for the Bays puts them at the top of the table with 28 points, one ahead of Capilano. CW drops to 4th place with 24 points. The Bays are starting to gel as a team with White and De Goede back in the lineup. The Bays always seem to play a little better when Morgan Williams is in the lineup as well. The Bays host the Caps next weekend in a top of the table encounter while CW visit the Vikes.

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

Premier League table leaders James Bay (6-1) dealt the reigning Rounsefell Cup champions Castaway Wanderers (4-2-1) their second loss of the season on Saturday, posting a 20-7 bonus point victory. James Bay had previously downed CW 15-10 in Premier League play back on November 19th.

James Bay's tries were recorded by Canadian Sevens national team player Connor Braid, Thyssen De Goede, Nolan Miles and Hugo Belanger. Oak Bay's second-ranked offence was stymied by the Bays, recording just one try on the day. Canadian international Ciaran Hearn crossed over for CW and converted his own score. Defending champs CW will look to bounce back next weekend when they head to Wallace Field to take on the UVic Vikes.

This is definitely the game to watch and there should be a good Island crowd on hand to watch the two top teams in action. CW at 24 points and JBAA at 23 points are vying for top spot. There's not much to choose between the teams, CW at home will be worth a few points. Taylor Paris may be suiting up for the Bays in this one and that will up the ante [ed. latest is he's resting a hamstring and is not available]. Hopefully we'll be able to post lineups sometime Friday for this match as that will have a lot to do with the outcome. But without that info at the time of writing, I'm thinking the CW home advantage along with an all Canadian front row and the likes of Mike Scholz in the backline may tip the balance. I expect this to be back and forth until the end and maybe the best kicker will decide the outcome. Prediction: CW by 1

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

The matchup between these two sides, referred to as the "100 years war", has provided some top level rugby in recent years. Just one point separates no.1 Castaway Wanderers from no. 2 James Bay in the standings, as the two sides continue to jockey for Island supremacy. The two powerhouses already met in Premier League play back on November 19th at MacDonald Park, and it was James Bay who came away with the 15-10 victory. CW have welcomed back a number of national team players for the 2011-2012 season, however, and have not lost a match since the winter break. CW's offence of 30.67 points per game ranks second in the league, led by Jonny Morris who has crossed over for four tries this season. A balanced attack from the veteran Bays has been led by Ontario standout JT Rowbotham who also has four tries to his credit. Defensively, James Bay holds the upper hand allowing just 12 points against per game, while the CW offence has been averaging 19.67 points against.

The Lower Island derby, which promises to draw a large crowd, will see ticket revenue go towards a good cause. CW are supporting an initiative recently created as a result of the passing of 18-year-old Tessa Beauchamp of Surrey, BC. The gate revenue and donations will go towards the Tessa Beauchamp Bursary Program to support athletic scholarships, burn survivors and cancer research.

PREM: Meraloma 29 @ UBCOB Ravens 12

The Lomas are charging hard and the question now is can they make up the 9 points that separates them from the last playoff spot. There's plenty of time left though with 7 weekends left and a possible 35 points on the table. The Ravens 15 points adrift of a possible playoff spot are in a less favourable position.

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

Meraloma Rugby Club (2-4-1) recorded a crucial bonus point win over Vancouver West rivals UBCOB Ravens (2-5), keeping them within two games of a playoff berth. The Lomas, who have made four straight appearances in Rounsefell Cup finals, are 2-1-1 since the winter break. Meraloma standout Charlie Allen crossed over for two tries on Saturday with scores also recorded by Pat Service, Eric Wilson and Shawn Mercier. Bryan Tyrer tacked on two conversions for the Lomas. The Ravens' points came courtesy of Jim Yeganegi and Benz Henrickson tries, with Ed Fairhurst kicking the conversion. The Meralomas will look to continue their winning ways when they host Abbotsford RFC at Connaught Park next Saturday at 2:45pm.

On current form the Lomas look the more dangerous team. They tied CW two weeks ago and were in a game against JBAA where either team could have prevailed. If the Lomas win this then the Ravens can pretty well say good-bye to post season action. Both teams have a lot of catching up to do on the top 4 but Lomas have a better chance of closing that gap. Ravens lost to CW 37-19 without Ed Fairhurst, Lomas tied CW, so the picture seems clear. Prediction: Lomas by 9.

MERALOMA

1 Mile Racic
2 Mike Georgas
3 Joe Scale
4 Brian Erichsen
5 Pat Service
6 Josh Clarke
7 Aaron Akehurst
8 Lynyrd Hall (I)
9 Eric Wilson - Captain
10 Bryan Tyrer
11 Greg Perih
12 Cam 0’Neill (I)
13 Brock Staller
14 Charlie Allan
15 Shawn Mercier

UBCOB RAVENS

1) Garret Garbe
2) Jim Yeganego
3) Pat Dessaulles
4) Mike Burak
5) Garner Lea
6) Ian Manly
7) Nick Waggot
8) Tom McKeen
9) Ed Fairhurst
10) Ben Thompson
11) Tristan Elliot
12) Benz Henrikson
13) Kol Henrikson
14) Alan Benckysuen
15) Jake Czerpak

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

Saturday's clash between Vancouver West teams no.5 Meraloma Rugby Club and no. 6 UBCOB Ravens will provide another exciting local derby match. The Ravens will be flying high after securing a last-gasp 26-25 win over the UVic Vikes last Saturday, courtesy of a conversion by Canadian Rugby World Cup standout Ed Fairhurst. The Ravens sit one point back of the Lomas in the standings, and a win would be crucial in terms of catching the top four teams in the standings. The Meralomas are still looking to find their footing in the 2012 Premier League season, having carried over three losses from the Fall competition. Since the winter break, the Lomas have shown they are still in the running as the defeated Abbotsford 56-0, drew reigning champs CW 28-28 and narrowly lost 16-10 to Island champs James Bay. The Lomas lineup features a number of elite athletes including 2009 BC Player of the Year Eric Wilson, as well as Bryan Tyrer, who currently sits second in the scoring charts with 58 overall.

PREM: Burnaby Lake 42 @ UVic Vikes 35

This was a very entertaining game with the lead switching many times throughout the afternoon. The Fijian flyers were a match for the speedy UVic backline and even 7s star Sean Duke couldn't find space. The difference was the Burnaby forward pack could assert itself at the necessary time to produce points when inside the "red zone". We named Burnaby prop, Scott Mackay, our BCRN MVP hoodie recipient this weekend. Burnaby are in 3rd spot now - 4 points adrift of league leaders James Bay. UVic are likely out of the playoff picture now as they are 15 points adrift of 4th place with their 7s players soon to depart for national duty. Also the University 7s tournament is next weekend with UVic one of the favourites.

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

For the second week in a row, the UVic Vikes (1-6) let victory slip in the final minutes of play, this time falling 42-35 to Burnaby Lake Rugby Club (5-1). The Vikes had been up 25-24 in last weekend's match against the UBCOB Ravens before UVic Alumnus Ed Fairhurst converted in the dying seconds to steal the 26-25 win. Burnaby's offence was in top form today, crossing over for six tries. BC senior men's provincial player Scott Mackay recorded two tries for Burnaby, with single tallies also recorded by fellow provincial standouts Nathan Mantle and Esava Nakulanisa. Adam Martin and Rory Mcdonell also crossed over for Burnaby. Burnaby kicker Geoff Ryan added another 12 points from the tee, slotting three conversions and two penalties.

It's difficult to figure out the form of Burnaby, the four cards they received last weekend against Caps sealed their fate but if they can keep their composure they look to be a team that can contest any game. Vikes are struggling with only 1 win in the Premier this season. Wallace Field is generally in good condition so with both teams having flyers it should be an entertaining game. This will be our MVP match of the weekend, we're committed to attend Mainland v Island games to see all the teams and this is our first look at Burnaby. Vikes with the return of Duke and Hirayama are more dangerous but Burnaby have some danger men in the backline with Jeke Gotegote way ahead in the tries scored department [ed. just learned that Gotegote is out of the lineup having accumulated 3 yellows this season]. Burnaby should get it done in the forwards if they keep their cool. Prediction: Burnaby by 4.

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

Burnaby Lake were knocked off their perch last Saturday, as the table leaders were dealt a stunning 28-8 loss by Lower Mainland rivals Capilano RFC. Burnaby's first loss of the season saw their league-leading offence unravel, notching just eight points, a far cry from their league best 34.4 ppg. Burnaby will look to bounce back against the struggling UVic Vikes, a team that currently sits seventh in the standings. When these two sides clashed back on February 4th, Burnaby were convincing winners with a final 41-12 decision.

PREM: Capilano 33 @ Abbotsford 21

A respectable result for Abby as they seem to be improving as the season progresses, too late for a playoff spot but gaining in confidence. The 12 point win was as predicted, once and a while we get them dead on. Caps have a big matchup next weekend at MacDonald Park against the Bays who made a strong statement this weekend defeating CW, last year's champions.

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

Abbotsford RFC (0-6) kept it close against the reigning Lower Mainland champions Capilano RFC (6-1), going into half time down just 14-7. Capilano stormed back in the second frame to take the match 33-21. Up next for Capilano is a road trip to MacDonald Park, where they will face off against table leaders James Bay for first place in the standings. When Capilano and James Bay squared off back on February 4th, the Caps produced a 23-6 win at Klahanie Park.

Abby have added some more firepower in the backline with Pack and Henderson from Bayside but still a 0-5 team going up against one of the league leaders is a tall order. Caps are firing on all cylinders right now and should get through this weekend with a bonus point. Prediction: Caps by 12.

Andrew Smith of BCRU writes:

North Shore club no.3 Capilano RFC are on a roll. The club avenged their only loss of the 2011-2012 season last weekend, downing Burnaby at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. The Caps will look to keep their momentum going against Abbotsford on Saturday, as they continue to hold down a top-four spot in the standings. Capilano's 25 ppg ranks third in overall scoring, and their main weapon continues to be Matt Yanagiya. A former Canada U20 scrum half, Yanagiya leads the league in scoring with 65 points, having notched three tries, eight penalties and a league-high 13 conversions. Abbotsford's offence has been reenforced by a number of former Bayside RFC products in recent weeks. The Fraser Valley squad could benefit from home field advantage, but will need a strong showing against Capilano's third ranked defence (11.67 ppg) to upset the reigning Lower Mainland champions.

DIV 1: Velox (1-2) @ Richmond (0-3) POSTPONED UNTIL MARCH 10TH

Neither team are setting the league on fire, only the top 3 teams make the playoffs and Bayside and Rowers have a virtual lock on position #1 and #2 so it's a fight to get the third spot and these two teams are only 2 points apart. It's a tough call since Richmond played the Rowers closer on the road than VV did (18-12 compared to 27-8). Velox's only win was at home so Richmond's home field is looming large. Prediction: Richmond by 2.

19. Brandon Sims
20. Salvador Pimentel
21. Richard Sison
22. Graham Haigh

DIV 1: Rowers (3-0) @ Bayside (3-0) POSTPONED UNTIL MARCH 10TH

The best game in Division One. Cowichan and Seattle aren't playing this weekend as I've heard they've agreed to a one-off winner takes all game on neutral ground to lessen travel costs. Regardless Bayside and Rowers are destined for the playoff round it's just a question of who will get the bye in the first round as the #1 seed. I haven't seen the Rowers play but they've been getting the results. Sharks have a higher PF, a lower PA so their stats look better plus they're at home. Prediction: Bayside by 6.
