High School Regional 7s - 2012

EARL MARRIOTT SR. BOYS WIN FRASER VALLEY 7S - 4 TIME DEFENDING CHAMPS

by Adam Roberts
posted April 14 2012

April 13th - The Fraser Valley 7’s Championship was held on a glorious day out in Sunny White Rock. The Tournament had a total of 24 teams competing in three separate divisions. A massive thank you goes out to the referee’s, led by the Referee in Chief of the Event Colin Campbell, Gurvinder Kalar, Jared House, Quinton Wilms, James McKenzie, and Lyndon Duncan. They did an outstanding job keeping the tournament on time and kept the coaches happy wit their officiating. Three of the officials are still in High School and you would be none the wiser watching them handle themselves. I would like to thank David Pue for his work at Earl Marriott helping develop roughly 24 certified referees.

In the Junior Division, the final was contested by Earl Marriott and Robert Bateman, these two teams know each other very well and the game was played with excellent spirit. Earl Marriott prevailed as the victors 28-12. Fleetwood Park of Surrey finished with the Bronze medal, after a narrow loss to Bateman in the Pool play, Kudos to Ryan O’Shea and Matt Falkner for their work.

In the Open Division, the tournament boasted 4 teams from New Zealand and 4 from Canada. It was a daunting task for the Lower Mainland teams to face but every player came away smiling after playing. Westlake Boys School from Auckland Won the Open Division going away.

The BC division had 8 teams vying for 3 spots at the BC Championships next weekend at St.Georges. So competition and expectations were high. In the final Earl Marriott took on Robert Bateman, the game was a tremendous spectacle. The work that some of these boys have put in with Shane Thompson and the BC Youth Sevens Programs has paid dividends to the players around them. Jordan Best of Bateman who was recently in Hong Kong, was a treat to watch. Earl Marriott came away with their fourth consecutive Fraser Valley 7’s title. The game for the 3rd and final seed at the BC’s was just an outstanding competition. Semiahmoo took on Lord Tweedsmuir and just the nature of the evenly matched game, it all came down to conversions. A very spirited affair saw Semiahmoo win 19-17 over cross-town rivals.

All the best going forward!
