Sport Cards Anyone? Interested in Canadian Rugby Cards? [ed. comments below] posted July 14 2012 I remember when I was a kid buying the packs of baseball or hockey cards, feverishly ripping apart the wrapper, devouring the gum, and then checking to see who I had and who was for trading. A great memory. I wish I had kept them all, now they trade online for ridiculous prices. Well how about rugby cards? I’ve never seen any so why not give it a try, so I got some made up. The first one is of DTH van der Merwe from a photo taken by Hugh Jervis, they turned out pretty good. Here is my idea. The cards would sell $10 for 2, each month we’d create a new one of a national team 7s or XVs player. The money would be distributed as follows: $1 to the photographer, $1 to the player, $1 to the club whose jersey is depicted in the photo (in the case of the national team then to Rugby Canada). The rest would go to printing, shipping and handling, and BC Rugby News. So if we could sell 100 sets of 2 then everyone would get $100, sell 1000 sets everyone gets a $1000. It could catch on and be a minor source of revenue for players and photographers (and clubs and BCRN). You don’t know until you try. Hell maybe Trafigura will buy a thousand and we’ll all be laughing. So if you’re interested you can send $10 (or a cheque) to: BC Rugby News 103 – 883 Van Isle Way Victoria, BC V9B 5R8 Include your mailing address and we’ll ship 2 DTH cards to you. If it becomes popular enough we’ll setup an online payment option. We’ll keep readers apprised of sales and whether it’s popular enough to continue. Worst case scenario you end up with a vintage one of a kind card worth money 20 years from now. DTH signs cards at Victoria 7s tournament photo by Sharon Tiffin
