  1. I’m curious why the coverage here consistently highlights only the top-tier youth competitions and leaves out the B pools/divisions. This has been the pattern for both youth and school events, including the 2024 finals and previous school competitions. Despite concerns many have about the state of the sport in this country, there is significant development and amazing work going in to rugby outside the traditional powerhouses, at least here in BC.

A focus solely on the so-called elite level has long been part of the challenge for rugby in Canada, so it’s surprising to see the same approach reflected here. It’s understandable that detailed information can be difficult to find when clubs aren’t sharing much, and that’s not on you. Credit to Kamloops and the Ravens recently, as well as to you for including the material they do provide. Still, this article, like others covering school results last Spring and club results last Fall, relies largely just on basic fixture and result lists. Why not include the second tier competitions, the smaller, less prominent programs that are actively helping the sport grow? Isn’t that a shared goal for all of us?

    • It comes down to a resource threshold, in this case the resource is time and effort. For example in senior rugby we cover Premier but not Div 1. I encourage members of the rugby community to exercise their writing skills and submit articles for publication. Kamloops is a great example, a member reached out and asked if they could submit articles, I said great! Clubs need to identify parents/players with writing skills and recognize their contributions. Not only can articles be submitted to BCRN they can be sent to the editor of local newspapers and online community news sites.

  2. I totally understand that in general! Like the Prem previews, where it wouldn’t be feasible to delve in to other levels. And I don’t want to come across entitled or unappreciative! However this isn’t a case of content required for an article or (much!) extra effort for this piece, it is literally a list of fixtures and results, copied from the BCRU and explicitly excluding some of them. It just struck me and I found it surprising. And just to be clear, this isn’t just about you and this site (the work you do is amazing) but indicative of a general attitude within the rugby community in Canada at times – even from Canada Rugby and the BCRU. A top down approach instead of bottom up, not just in this context.
