Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship Kicks Off November 30th: Schedule and Seedings

The Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship is set to kick off on November 30th at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium. Tickets can be purchased online at: www.universe.com/events/cumrc-tournament-pass-tickets-1J3L25.

There are still a couple of matches remaining to determine the final picture. In Ontario the top seed from that region will be based on the November 12th match between Guelph and Laurier, the winner will be ONT 1 and the loser ONT 2. Queen’s University who have been the top Ontario team in the past, failed to qualify this year. They are the only non BC university to finish in the top two, a Silver Medal, in 2019. The wild card team will be decided in a match between TWU and UBC Okanagan on November 19th. From Quebec, McGill has earned tournament entry, replacing the usual Quebec representative, Concordia. In the Maritimes, it’s Memorial University of Newfoundland who will be first time Atlantic representatives. Calgary will return to represent the Prairies.

UVic go in as top seed due to their +2 point differential in the Coastal Cup matches against UBC, UVic won the first match, UBC the second. Ontario 1, either Guelph or Laurier will go in as 2nd seed, UBC 3rd, Ontario 2 as 4th seed, McGill as 5th seed, Calgary as 6th, Memorial 7th and either TWU or UBC Okanagan as 8th.

Last year UBC won Gold, UVic Silver, Queen’s Bronze, then Guelph 4th, Concordia 5th, Calgary 6th, Royal Military College 7th, Dalhousie 8th. UBC have won 3 of the 4 national championships with UVic winning the other one.

Our early predictions this year, UBC to win it all, they have been steadily improving since that loss to UVic early in the season and UVic to come 2nd. The top Ontario team to win Bronze. The same pattern as last year. TWU will likely be the wild card team and unless they defeat UVic in the first match they will be very competitive in the Consolation bracket.

The tournament, no doubt, will be live streamed but we haven’t seen any details at this time.
