Rugby Canada Adds More Welsh Expertise to Coaching Staff: Marc Carter Analysis Coach
A month after announcing a shared deal with the MLR Toronto Arrows to bring Welsh coach Rob Howley to Canada, Rugby Canada have struck another deal with the MLR LA Giltinis. This time it’s to bring on board Marc Carter as Performance Analyst.
Carter started with the Welsh Rugby Union in 2009 as a Performance Analyst, he moved on to Scarlets Rugby in 2011 and then back to the Welsh Rugby Union in 2016. He spent two years as the Academy Head of Performance Analysis before taking on a job with the Hong Kong Rugby Union as the Manager of Performance Analysis. In 2020 he started a contract Performance Analysis company, Spark Sports Analysis.
The national men’s XVs program has a history of stocking their coaching staff based on the nationality of the head coach. When Kieran Crowley from New Zealand was head coach he brought a number of coaching assistants in from NZ, including his brother. Welshman Kingsley Jones is again following that pattern.
The article below is from the MLR team LA Giltinis. Rugby Canada had a brief comment through social media, “Rugby Canada is looking forward to welcoming Marc Carter in a Mens XV coaching/analyst role later in 2021! His extensive professional and international rugby experience will aid on the road to RWC 2023.”
from LA Giltinis
The LA Giltinis coaching team continues set the benchmark in the MLR with the appointment of International Rugby Performance Analyst, Marc Carter.
Carters resume stems for over 14 years as an elite Performance Analyst, playing key roles at Pro14 Champions Scarlets Rugby, Welsh Rugby Union and for the last 3 years building and leading the analysis department in Hong Kong and Asia.
A further boost for the Giltinis and the MLR, Carter will be working in a dual role with Rugby Canadas National Mens team during their International windows and test schedules, aligning with the Clubs charter in developing local talent from within the MLR.
When I got the call and offered the chance to work with a new and innovative Rugby franchise like the Giltinis, it was instant excitement and a dream opportunity for me, Said Carter.
Also, to be able to link and play a key role within the Rugby Canadas International program really made this a once in lifetime opportunity, especially with the rise of Rugby in this part of the world.
Ive always had a love for North American sports, not only in the way they use analysis and technology to be the best, but the passion the fans have for their teams to win.
Performance Analysis will play a major part in the Clubs success, not just at the Giltinis but across the youth and development of programs at every level, this is something I know the coaches and Club is very passionate about.
General Manager Adam Freier said the news of Marcs appointment was a tribute to the way the Giltinis will collaborate with international bodies in the future to ensure that not only players are developed, but coaches as well.
Kingsley Jones (Canadian Head Coach) has been a class act when it comes to how Rugby Canada can support the MLR, and we see this as just the start of a fruitful partnership between the two Rugby programs, Said Freier
Any analysis role in Rugby is a fortunate position to be in, as they are most often the middle person between coaches and players.
They not only need the technical component, but they need to have a specific personality Marc certainly brings both.
Marc understands what makes players tick and adapts his work to support players learning styles.
He is an exceptional analysis coach, and will play a key role in maximizing player development in both the Giltinis and across our youth and development programs here in LA.
Canadian Head Coach Kingsley Jones echoed the same sentiment as Freier and the relationship with the two bodies moving forward.
Marc is another key addition to our coaching team. We are thankful to the LA Giltinis for this arrangement, as we continue to explore innovative ways to add resources during this challenging time.
Rugby Canada is a supporter of Major League Rugby, and having our coaches working with and observing the Canadian players in the league while also helping teams develop is a true win-win for all involved.
The Giltinis will kick off their Major League Rugby campaign on the weekend of March 20, 2021, with the team officially forming for pre-season camp from February.
