Scott Manning Named New Vikes Coach to Replace Doug Tate

VICTORIA -The University of Victoria is delighted to announce Scott Manning as the new head coach of the Vikes men’s rugby program, effective June 28, 2021. Manning will take the reins from long-time head coach Doug Tate who is retiring after 27 years.
“I’m beyond excited about accepting this role. Doug was a huge influence on me, and I have always placed the UVic program leader and head coaching position at the pinnacle of my rugby coaching aspirations. To get a job like this, in the city I want to live in, is really a dream come true,” said Manning.
Originally from Alberta, Manning played rugby for Canada at the U17 and U19 levels before playing for the Vikes from 2006 -2010. When sidelined by an injury, Manning transitioned into coaching and has since built an impressive resume garnering experience at every level.
Manning is currently the director of rugby and the senior men’s head coach for the Castaway Wanderers RFC and is an assistant coach with Rugby Canada’s U18 program. Heavily involved in the provincial rugby scene, he will be working with the BC U19s upon return to play and spent time as an assistant coach with the BC Bears senior men’s and women’s programs.

We are thrilled to have such an energetic and progressive coach join our Vikes team,” said Director, Varsity Performance Sport, Nick Clarke.
While playing for the Vikes, Manning graduated with a Bachelor of Education before later completing a Master of Education in Coaching Studies from UVic. Manning will step away from his position as a teacher in the Greater Victoria School District at the end of the year to take on his new role as program leader with the Vikes.
“My experience as a Vike, combined with lessons learned coaching against the Vikes, gives me first-hand insight into where this program has been, where it is now, and where it could go. I’m excited to have the time to fully commit to coaching and work with these young, eager and dedicated players,” said Manning.
