Coastal Cup and University Championship Qualifier UBC Defeat UVic; Coastal Cup Pride Down TWU; Full Match Videos
There’s no Premier this weekend as the Kamloops Youth 7s has the attention of the BCRU staff and BC referees. There are however two Coastal Cup matches, one which also counts towards qualification for the National University Championships being held in November. UVic, UBC and TWU play a home and away series with the top 2 teams representing BC at the University Championships. UBC have already won their first match against TWU and this will be UVic’s first qualifier match. The Pride are visiting TWU in the other Coastal Cup match.
University Of Victoria 26 v UBC 43 @ 14:30
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Martin Thornton AR2: Olivia Ross
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field
It was a close game at the half, 17-14 in favour of UBC but UBC put the pedal down in the last 10 minutes to pull away and win by a comfortable margin. The match had 3 implications, the University Championship qualifier, the Coastal Cup and the Wightman Boot between the two sides. UBC are ranked #1 in the university coach’s poll and this result should keep them there, they’ve all but ensured their qualification as they’re 2-0 with wins over TWU and UVic with two rematches on the horizon. In the Coastal Cup they look favourites with the match vs Pacific Pride on November 22nd looking to be the decider. In the Wightman Boot they have a +17 lead in the total point series, the rematch is on October 4th. For UBC their two players with national team experience Stephen Webb and Cody Nhanala had big games, UVic never found a way to get Cooper Coats involved when he subbed in, it looks like at fullback.
PREGAME
Last weekend UBC ran into a talented Burnaby side and came away with a draw, UVic clawed their way back from a large half time deficit to the Pride and ended up winning the match.
UBC have no changes from 1 to 10 with some rotation in the backline. Demitri Patterson comes into the match 23 on the wing, moving Andrianos to the bench. Liam Turnbull comes off the bench to start at inside centre and Liam James moves to the wing.
The big news for UVic is on the bench, Cooper Coats wears #22 and will make his appearance somewhere in the backs likely during the second half. He’s apparently doing his medical degree at UVic and if that’s the case he’ll follow the likes of Mark Lawson and Michael Smith on the path from national team player to medical professional. The only change in the forwards is at second row where Muiredach Casey replaces Dane Siebens. In the backs a couple of players come off the bench for startsing roles, Keegan Neary on the wing, and Mason Levin at inside centre. Star U20 player, Josh McIndoe, is apparently getting some rest time to recuperate from a niggling injury.
We’re not going on a prediction on this one as it’s not a Premier weekend… except to predict it will be an entertaining match.

Trinity Western University 22 v Pacific Pride 50 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Northcott AR1: John Hight AR2: Trevor Honey
Venue: Yorkson Community Park
TWU actually led at the half, 22-17. It was tied at 22-22 with 20 minutes left and the Pride scored 28 unanswered points in the final quarter. TWU will be happy with their first 60 minutes after the large loss to UBC in their first match. They’ll be eyeing the two games with UVic, the first at TWU next weekend and the return at UVic on October 18th. The Pride resume Premier play next weekend on the road at Capilano.
PREGAME
TWU were pummelled by UBC in their first match, their most important match of the season will be against UVic as last year it was neck and neck as to which one would claim the second university spot for the University Championship. For the Pride this is a chance to get their Coastal Cup defence back on track although losing to UVic in the opener makes that a difficult task.
