Eight BC Student-Athletes Playing for Acadia University – by Rod MacDonald
This past Friday, the Acadia Women’s University rugby team played The University of Prince Edward Island. Two matches were played in Wolfville and included a development team matchup as well as a U Sports league game.
Eight student-athletes from British Columbia played in these matches.
In recent years, more players have decided to look East for their academic and rugby futures finding it lucrative with regards to rewards and playing time. The quaint town of Wolfville, in the Annapolis Valley reminds the girls of their own Fraser Valley in BC.
This influx of BC talent has showcased the hard work and dedication of local rugby clubs’ coaches, volunteers and parents from across the province. During much of the development match, in which Acadia won by a score of 88-0, the backline was compromised of BC ladies. In the marquee matchup, Acadia took the win, with 10 tries scored and a final tally of 62-14.
All of the ladies from BC took part on the day and saw loads of playing time, while representing their province with champagne rugby.
Acadia boasts double the amount of BC players compared to any team in the Atlantic Conference. This level of recruiting is due to the efforts of Coach Matt Durant. Please contact him if any rugby players are looking to pursue their academic future at Acadia. matthew.durant@acadiau.ca

Ken Peace Memorial Challenge Game This Weekend by Doug Primrose
The Ken Peace Memorial Challenge Game between Abbotsford Rugby Club and Langley Rugby Club is taking place this coming Saturday. This match is to honour rugby legend Ken Peace, who played for both clubs during his rugby career, which spanned four decades.
Peace began playing in Langley before moving to Abbotsford when they started their club. He soon moved up to play on the B.C. Presidential 10s team. In 1978 he made his Canadian senior national team debut against France, and continued as a member of Team Canada from 1978 to 1981, playing international matches against Samoa, Fiji, France, and Wales. Ken juggled playing rugby for Canada and his career as a lineman for BC Hydro. Ken Peace was also captain of the Nike Worlds Masters championship-winning team in 1999, capturing gold at the prestigious tournament in Portland.
Ken Peace passed away from cancer in 2023, and his legacy and memory will be honoured this coming Saturday at Exhibition Park in Abbotsford. The memorial challenge cup was created by both clubs where Ken left his legacy. This Division 1 match kicks off at 2:30pm.
Shawnigan Lake School Job Opening – Head of Rugby

The Head of Rugby works closely with the Director of Athletics to ensure that rugby is fully aligned with the Shawnigan Sports Strategy and Sporting Philosophy, contributing to the broader strategic goals of the Athletics Department and the School.
Shawnigan rugby runs 7 teams across the men’s and woman’s programs and the Head of Rugby will support the coaches in charge of those teams to deliver exceptional playing and developmental experiences. The Head of Rugby will support the growth of athletes throughout the year, as well as coordinating each team’s respective competitive season (Fall for grade 8, Spring for grades 9-12).
A key responsibility of the role will be helping to plan and deliver the 2028 Centenary of Rugby at Shawnigan, ensuring that this significant milestone celebrates the history and legacy of rugby at the School while also creating a vision for its future.
The Head of Rugby will promote the “one sport – one club” philosophy, ensuring that all participants are valued members of the Shawnigan rugby community and that the program provides meaningful opportunities for students of varying levels of experience and ability.

Appointment: Permanent appointment. Full-time 0.8 FTE to 1.0 FTE position.
Compensation: $70,000 – $90,000 per year. Starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience, and internal parity. Salary will be prorated to FTE.
