BC Rugby Weekend of February 15th 2025

BC Premier Make-Up Weekend: Men’s Premier Pacific Pride Dominate 2nd Half for Win Over James Bay; Women’s Premier Westshore Blank CW

It’s a make up weekend, family day weekend, but most of the games have been cancelled again due to field closures. The Ravens v Burnaby game at Jericho was a late cancellation. There’s only the one men’s Premier game, Pride v Bays, again Starlight Stadium to the rescue. The women’s Premier game Westshore v CW was moved from Westshore to CW and from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon.

Men Premier

James Bay AA 19 v Pacific Pride 57 @ 14:00
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: Madeline Berry
Venue: Starlight Stadium

A strong win for the Pride, we understand the game was 26-19 at the half, so the Pride really pulled away in the second 40. It’s a shame the Pride don’t have anyone writing up their matches, and the games aren’t streamed, or archived for later viewing. Last week the opposition, Westshore, streamed the game. The win puts the Pride in second place, 31 points from 9 games, 3.44 points per match. A shade ahead of the Lomas who are at 3.43 points per match, with 24 points from 7 games. The Pride aren’t eligible for the playoffs, so in terms of playoff spots, Meraloma are in 2nd place. The Bays remain in last place with 9 points from 8 games, 1.13 points per match. Next action is March 1st with the Bays visiting Westshore and the Pride have a bye. Other Premier action that weekend sees Capilano host UBC, Ravens host CW and UVic host Burnaby.

Scorers for the Pride were Noah Kyneston x 2, Braden Bruce x 2, Daniel Lucic, Karl Hunger, Liam Poulton, Ty Driscoll, Austin Creighton.

PREGAME

#3 hosting #10. Both teams coming off wins in their last matches, the Bays over Burnaby and the Pride over Westshore.

The Bays have a consistent tight five from last match, Cody Nhanala gets the start at openside. They are missing Tom Richardson this week at blindside flanker and Mostyn Findlay from the backline. Kainoa Lloyd moves from wing to outside centre. The halfback pairing of Crosby Stewart and Josh Thiel remains the same. Hayden Jenkins starts on the wing.

The Pride rotate their front row, Karl Hunger moves from second row to blindside flanker and Jaiden John comes into the second row with James Stockwood. Daniel Muzaliwa gets the start at scrum-half, he looked ambitious when he came in against Westshore last week, may be one to watch. Jamin Hodgkins remains at flyhalf but he has a new backline to work with, wings Blundell and Poulton, centres Cooper and Roy and Jean-Louis Desgouttes at fullback. There’s a new name on the roster, Thomas Cuzange, from Toulon. Listed by RC as Tomas Cuzagne on the Instagram post but almost certain it’s Thomas Cuzange, recently arrived from France, be interesting to watch his form when he comes on.

The Bays play well when they have a few national level players added to the mix, like Lloyd, Thiel, Nhanala. They’re missing D’Shawn Bowen though, a good indicator he may be playing for the 7s team next week. The Pride have a new backline so a lot depends how it clicks, Jamin Hodgkins is getting a good test at #10 working with new combinations each week. It’s a tough one to call with players in and out but I’ll go with Pride again. Prediction: Pride by 5.

A comprehensive win for Westshore and they’re tied at the top of the standings with UBC, we’ll call them Thunderbirds Blue, at 20 points from 5 games, 4 points per match. CW remain in 4th place with 9 points from 5 games, 1.8 points per match. Play resumes on March 1st when CW host the other UBC team, we’ll call them Thunderbirds Gold, who haven’t played a match yet. Westshore has a bye and Seattle host Burnaby Lake.
