BC Rugby Weekend of January 23rd 2026

BC Premier Week 11 Results: Caps 53 – Pride 14, CW 14 – Ravens 29, UBC 34 – Bays 26, Lomas 19 – Vikes 31, Westshore 35 – Burnaby 34; Women’s Premier Westshore 39 – Burnaby 36, CW 27 –  Ravens 19

The spring season returned with some close matches. The Westshore v Burnaby Premier matches were decided by a total of 4 points, 1 point in the men’s match and 3 points in the women’s match. Both full match videos are posted below courtesy of the Westshore youtube channel. The Vikes win and the Bays loss sees the Vikes move up to 6th place, the important last playoff spot. Caps crushed the Pride by 39 points, a tough start to the spring season for the Rugby Canada academy team. Ravens and UBC, last year’s finalists, continue their winning ways and face off against each other next weekend.

MEN’S PREMIER

Capilano 53 v Pacific Pride 14 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Tyler DAWSON AR2: Mckenzie Eckart
Venue: Klahanie Park

A +39 win wasn’t what we predicted, we thought Caps would win but not by this much. It’s 3 games in a row the Pride have given up 50 points or close to it, 53 to Caps, 45 to JBAA and 57 to Chicago Hounds academy. It’s time to start focusing on D during the midweek academy sessions. The Pride now 0-5 in Premier play, the Caps go to 7-3 and remain in 4th place behind Ravens. Next week the Pride visit the Lomas and Caps visit James Bay.

PREGAME

#4 hosting #10. The Pride are looking for their first win of the season in Premier, the Caps in solid playoff contention. Caps defeated Burnaby in their last match in December. The Pride lost to a touring Chicago Hounds academy team in their last match.

The Caps have added Sam Reimer, a good addition for them at scrum half. We haven’t heard much of him since last MLR season with Utah. They’re missing Mike Moloney who was on the injured list for the national 7s team that went to Dubai.

The big addition for the Pride during the winter break was Jacob Ince at inside centre. They’re starting Jean-Louis Desgouttes at #10 with Jamin Hodgkins in the reserves. Jacques Bonsant moves straight into the starting roster in his debut.

The Caps are hard to defeat at home, they’re on a 2 game winning streak. Prediction: Caps by +5.

Castaway Wanderers 14 v UBCOB Ravens 29 @ 14:30
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: David Hale
Venue: Windsor Park

A +15 win for Ravens is in the ballpark with our predictions. CW at 1-9 and 14 points outside a playoff spot. The Ravens keep hold of 3rd place with a 7-3 record and 39 points. Next week Ravens visit UBC which should be an epic battle between #2 and #3. CW will visit Burnaby.

PREGAME

#8 hosting #3. CW with only one win so far this season, that was against the Lomas at home. The Ravens coming off a win in their last match, also against the Lomas.

The Ravens missing Lucas Rumball but have David O’Donaghue back. In the reserves they’ve added Owain Ruttan and Jacob Bourne.

CW have added Merlin M’Cloud at openside flanker, moving on from UVic. Gradyn Bowd missing at #10 so Jordan Tait moves from centre. Liam Poulton takes the #13 position having transferred from the Pacific Pride after the fall season. Ethan Hager missing on the wing but AJ Kosempel has returned.

Ravens go in as favourites based on fall results, CW have added a couple of players, we’ll see if it’s enough to turn their fortunes around. Prediction: Ravens by +7.

Meraloma 19 v University Of Victoria 31 @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Rachel Morrison AR2: Jeremy Duncan
Venue: Connaught Park

A +12 win for the visiting Vikes, having the national team #10 in the roster didn’t hurt and they absorbed the loss of two forwards in the spring season. They move ahead of the Bays into 6th and the final playoff spot. The Lomas remain in 9th place. Next week the Vikes visit Westshore and the Lomas host the Pride.

PREGAME

#9 hosting #7. Both teams needing wins to make a run at a top 6 playoff spot. The Lomas on a 3 game losing streak, the Vikes on a 2 game win streak with wins over CW and JBAA.

The Lomas have a new #10, Anzac Tipene, not much known about him, possibly from NZ. A reference in the Otago Times from 2022 on the Zingari-Richmond roster, “First five Anzac Tipene played for the Southern colts last season and has also taken flight to Monticello.” #8 Conor O’Brien is one of their key players and he’s in the roster this week.

UVic have Cooper Coats back at #10, a boost for them. They’re missing Morgan di Nardo but Adam Doane returns from his debut with the national 7s team. The spring season usually sees a few university players move on, hooker Jordy Auger has moved to the Pride and loose forward Merlin M’Cloud has moved to CW.

A difficult one to predict, UVic travelling but they have Cooper Coats back, but they also have a couple of starting forwards who have moved on. Prediction: Vikes by +3.

UBC RFC  34 v James Bay AA 26 @ 14:30
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Juan Pablo Rey AR2: Sam Klein-Laufer
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

The one prediction we got wrong, we thought the Bays with a couple of national team players would have the edge but the Thunderbirds thought otherwise. It was fairly close at +8 but no double bonus point for the Bays which puts them behind UVic now in the playoff race by the smallest percentage. The Vikes and Bays meet in February in an important match. Next week the Vikes travel to Westshore and the Bays host Capilano.

PREGAME

#2 hosting #6. UBC defaulted their last Premier match when they opted to travel south of the border for a match against Life University instead of their scheduled Premier game. They lost that match 32-19. James Bay won their last match against the Pacific Pride by a healthy margin 45-14, that ended their 3 game losing streak.

UBC missing James Biss who has been their starting #10 for the past few seasons, he’s graduated and Caleb Seumanutafa now takes on the role of starting #10. Cody Nhanala one of their key players and he starts at #8. Takoda McMullin missing but brother Talon is in the reserves.

The Bays have their ‘A’ roster with Callum Botchar, who has signed with the Seattle Seawolves of the MLR, playing second row. They’ve also added Noah Flesch to the centres. Kyle Steeves remains at tighthead and Kainoa Lloyd on the wing.

Usually UBC would be clear favourites but with the Bays having a few national team players in the roster it levels the prediction odds. The game is at a neutral venue as well, at the Bayside club. Prediction: Bays by +2.

20) Pete Massimo / Carter Haddow
21) Tom Burton / Dakota Lachance
22)  Mike Nieuhuysen
23) Jeremiah Gonevou / Malik James

Westshore 38 v Burnaby Lake 37 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Annabelle Lapointe AR2: Tim Stokes
Venue: Juan De Fuca

This was as close as a game can get, a +1 win for the home side to retain their #1 ranking. Burnaby remains in 5th place. Westshore owned the first half but Burnaby roared back in the 2nd half. It was Westshore 28-14 at the half, the final according to the video (see below) was 35-34 but either way it was a one point win. Kudos to Westshore for putting on another live stream, they seem to be leading the league in streaming technology. Next week Westshore host the Vikes and Burnaby host CW.

PREGAME

#1 hosting #5. These two teams met just before the winter break in Burnaby and it was a close, low scoring match, a 15-9 win for Westshore.

Burnaby have a strong looking forward pack anchored by tighthead Bryce Worden. They have Ethan Turner back from the national 7s team and starting at #10. They are missing their Fijian players who travelled to the Coral Coast 7s last week with the Pacific Warriors. Guiseppe du Toit also missing. Taitusi Vikilani returns in the reserves.

Westshore have a potent backline with national level players and featuring Thomas Isherwood who was Canada’s player of the tournament at SVNS 3 in Dubai. They’ve added Avery Oitomen who was an outstanding winger for the Toronto Arrows and then Miami in the MLR. He’s been off our radar since 2024. They’re missing some forwards Karl Hunger has gone to Portugal and Kaden Duguid to NZ.

This match looks to be a classic forwards v backs game with Burnaby having an edge in the forwards and Westshore in the backline. Burnaby playing a 5/3 bench and Westshore a 4/4. Should be an interesting last 20 minutes. Westshore won the first one, we’ll go with that. Prediction: Westshore by +4.

WOMEN’S PREMIER

Castaway Wanderers 27 V UBCOB Ravens 19 @ 12:45

A +8 win for CW, exactly as our prediction stated, it happens once and a while. Next week Ravens visit the Thunderbirds and CW visit Burnaby.

PREGAME

#4 hosting #8. CW on a 3 game winning streak. The Ravens defaulted their matches in the fall season and this is the first match for them in Premier. It’s not clear if the result will count in the standings as the defaults haven’t been recorded in the table.

CW  with a stable lineup, Jamie Knaggs and Jess Beaudry return to the roster in the forwards. In the backs Hadley MacPherson moves from centre to #10 and Sarah Chen and Kayla Conway come into the roster in starting roles.

This is the first look at the Ravens roster, Alayna Scramstad and Jordan McLeod are captains. Scramstad played for Burnaby last season and McLeod for the Thunderbirds.

CW would go in as favourites as the Ravens are still an unknown in playing strength. Prediction: CW by +8.

Westshore 39 V Burnaby Lake 36 @ 12:45
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: Olivia Ross AR2: Kenneth Yee
Venue: Juan De Fuca

We predicted a draw in this match and it almost was accurate. It was 36-36 going into the final minute and a penalty in front of the posts with time expired proved to be the winner. Again kudos for providing the live stream (below). Next week Westshore hosts Seattle and Burnaby hosts CW.

PREGAME

These teams tied for 2nd/3rd with 17 points from 5 games. They met just before the break in Burnaby with the home team coming away with a +17 win.

Burnaby have a stable roster with most of their roster returning from last match, the only caution is the 4 TBD on the bench which may play a factor in the last 20 minutes if they can’t find the bodies.

Westshore have added a couple of players to the front row Sierra Gillis and Kendra Cousineau who played for Ealing Trailfinders in the English Premier. They’ve also added Canada 7s player Maya Addai on the wing.

Westshore have an improved roster from their 17 point loss last meeting, Burnaby may be travelling light in the reserves. It should a closer game. Prediction: Draw.

  1. Pride desperately need a coaching overhaul. They’re a young team sure but there’s no way a squad full of what’s supposed to be the future of Canadian Rugby should be getting 50 pieced regularly in a domestic competition.

I wonder if there are plans to bring in some ex-MLR players who have been left without a job.
