BC Premier Week 5 Results: UBC Vanquish Burnaby; Caps Top CW; Lomas Fall to Bays; Ravens Soar Past Vikes – Women’s Premier Westshore Defeat CW; Burnaby Edge UBC
It’s Week 5 of the BC Premier with 4 matches, Westshore and Pride have a bye and are playing a friendly on Friday evening at Starlight Stadium. It’s Week 3 of the Women’s Premier with 2 matches on the slate. UBC remain the only undefeated side in men’s Premier, while Burnaby and Westshore top the women’s Premier.
Castaway Wanderers 29 v Capilano 45 @ 14:30
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: Dan Cvitanovich AR2: Chris Horsley (Pending)
Venue: Windsor Park
A +16 win by the visiting Caps exceeded the predictions. CW remain winless now at 0-4. Caps keep pace with JBAA with a 3-2 record, just behind Ravens, Westshore and UBC. Next weekend Capilano visit Meraloma and CW have the tough task of visiting the #1 Thunderbirds.
PREGAME
CW coming off a loss to JBAA last week in the crosstown rivalry and Caps coming off an upset win over Burnaby at home. CW at 0-3 looking for their first win and Caps at 2-2 in a 5th/6th tie with JBAA.
CW missing Gavin Kratz, Aiden Cole gets the starting tighthead assignment. Gradyn Bowd returns at #10 but two high profile backline players missing, Jack Shaw and Ethan Hager.
Caps with a similar starting XV to last week, they’re missing Austin James and Ryan Leskiw gets the start.
This is a tough one to pick, Caps are the on form team out of the two, they surprised Burnaby at home in wet conditions, it will be raining again on Saturday. CW seem to be missing something this season, they have Gradyn Bowd back but now are missing two outside threats. Have to go with Caps on this one even though it’s their first cross strait trip of the season. Prediction: Caps by +5.
Sean’s Prediction: Capilano to take the W against Castaway by 3 points, I think it could be a tight one with these sides. Capilano +3.

James Bay AA 41 v Meraloma 31 @ 14:30
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: Al Humphries AR2: John De Goede
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park
The Bays with a +10 win and go to 3-2 and 4th/5th place tie with the Caps. The Lomas fall to 1-4 and 8th place. Next weekend the Lomas host the Caps and the Bays host the Ravens.
PREGAME
The Bays at 2-2 won at home last week versus CW, Meraloma at 1-3 were blown away by the Ravens last week.
The Bays still have their two national team props, Kyle Steeves starts at tighthead and Sam Miller is in the reserves. Callum Botchar moves from second row to blindside flanker. Austin Creighton is missing this week. The rest of the roster looks the same with some rotation from the bench.
The Lomas missing their #8 and captain Jalan Farris this week. Jordan Quinn moves from prop to blindside flanker and Marcus Ale moves from flanker to #8. The rest of the starting XV looks the same.
The Bays are the form team out of the two, playing at home, they go in as favourites. Prediction: Bays by +8.
Sean Prediction: JBAA have been in decent shape and I think they will get the job done at home against Meraloma by 3. JBAA by +3.

UBCOB Ravens 33 v University Of Victoria 21 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Northcott AR1: Phil Webster AR2: David Smortchevsky
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
The Ravens with a +12 win met the prediction expectations, they go to 3-2 and are in 3rd place in points per match with one more bonus point than Caps and Bays. UVic at 1-3 are in 7th place. Next week the Ravens visit the Bays and UVic visit Burnaby.
PREGAME
The Ravens 2-2 looked good last week with a comprehensive win over the Lomas. The Vikes, 1-2, were tentative in their win over TWU last week, going ahead early but fading near the end for a narrow win.
The Ravens rotate their props and Jake Ikeda comes in to take the place of Lucas Rumball who is not in the roster this week. Those are the only changes in the starting XV. In the reserves a changing of the Carson’s, Frank is in and Jack is out.
UVic have Cooper Coats back but are missing Michael Oughtred. Also a few starting forwards Nic Willey, Merlin M’Cloud and Brendan Kim are missing.
It will be a good matchup at #10, Lachlan Kratz and Cooper Coats, both national team level. Ravens are the in form team, we’ll see how missing Lucas Rumball will impact the team. Prediction: Ravens by +10.
Sean’s Prediction: I’m going back with the Ravens to defeat the UVIC by 9. Could be closer as UVIC prepare for Nationals. Ravens by +9.

UBC RFC 40 v Burnaby Lake 24 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Keller Reeves AR2: Bradley Schwalger
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
A +16 win for the #1 T-Birds. They sit clear at the top of the table with a 5-1-0 record, redeeming their one draw against Burnaby in Week 1. Burnaby drop to 2-1-2 and 6th place. Next week UBC host CW and Burnaby host the Vikes.
PREGAME
UBC are the only undefeated team in the league and obliterated #2 Westshore last week. Burnaby were upset last week and the cold, rainy weather may not be ideal conditions for the Fijian flair they have in the backline.
UBC have a few rotations in the forwards Ethan McCarthy starts at hooker and Australian Aiden Sutherland is in the backrow. A new look from 11 to 15, Takoda McMullin gets his first start after returning from injury, his brother Talon takes the week off. Liam James moves from fullback to inside centre. Two new wingers, Niko Andrianos and Elijah Palov, get the start.
Burnaby are missing their stalwart tighthead prop, Bruce Worden. Also missing is blindside flanker, Clinton Odhiambo. They have Guiseppe du Toit in the roster, a great addition for them. Ethan Turner moves to fullback and Napolioni Bolaca returns to #10. Fijian flyer Tevita Daugunu returns to the roster at inside centre. It’s a formidable backline.
UBC have to go in as favourites, at home, undefeated. Burnaby are difficult to predict, brilliant one week, under performing the next. These teams tied 30-30 in week 1. Prediction. UBC by +7.
Sean’s Prediction: Thunderbirds has looked so good so far and it looks like they will be favourites as of right now. I think they’ll win by 3 over Burnaby Lake. UBC by +3.

Westshore 37 v Castaway Wanderers 26 @ 12:45
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Sam Klein-Laufer AR2: Kenneth Yee
Venue: Juan De Fuca
Westshore roared out to a 25-0 lead, 5 tries but no conversions. Westshore fell off their game in the second half and CW stormed back to claim a bonus point in the loss. Westshore go to 2-0 and are tied with Burnaby at the top of the standings. CW are 0-2 and tied with Seattle for 6th/7th. Next week Westshore host Abbotsford and CW visit UBC.
PREGAME
Westshore 1-0 at home to CW 0-1. Westshore defeated Abby and CW lost to the Lomas.
Westshore have a good looking backline with 2 national 7s players, Breanne Nicholas at #10 and Keyara Wardley at #13. The Sims sisters anchor the front row with veteran Chelsey Minter. Again they’re a little short on number but up to 21 from 20 last week.
CW have a fairly stable roster from last match, Emily Samek comes in at scrum half, Gwynnie Fry at wing and Mirin O’Regan at fullback.
Westshore at home with two national team 7s players and a solid front row go in as favourites. Prediction: Westshore by +8.

Vancouver Thunderbirds 24 v Burnaby Lake 29 @ 12:45
Referee: Bradley Schwalger AR1: Mckenzie Eckart AR2: Keller Reeves
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
Burnaby upset the two time defending champions, Thunderbirds. Burnaby are tied with Westshore at 2-0 while UBC go 1-1 and sit in 3rd place. Next week Burnaby visit Lomas and Thunderbirds host CW.
PREGAME
Both these teams defeated Seattle, Burnaby with the larger scoreline. However the Thunderbirds haven’t been defeated in a long time. Even though they’re the players that didn’t crack the first squad playing in the University Championships there are a lot of good young players in the squad.
The Thunderbirds don’t usually post their roster until game day but we’ve got the Oct 4th and 18 rosters below. It shows the depth of the program with Lanae Davenport coming into the roster, she was on the BC U19 team and also attended the Canada West U18 camp in 2023.
Burnaby are missing their #8 Ada Okonkwo, they have a new halfback combination with Kaila France moving from fullback to scrum half and #10 Miriama Naiobasali new to the roster.
The Thunderbirds have dominated the BC Premier the last two years, suffering very few defeats. They’ll go in as favourites at home. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +6.
