BC Premier Week 3 Results: Westshore Topple Bays; Burnaby Defeat Meraloma; Capilano Fall at Ravens; Vikes Lose to UBC – Exhibition Pride Outscore Seattle – Week 1 Women’s Premier Burnaby Stop Seattle, Meraloma Dominate CW
It’s Week 3 of the BC Premier and we see some big names returning to play in the Canadian Winter League, aka BC Premier. Just at #10 we have national team players Cooper Coats, Andrew Coe, Mark Balaski, Ethan Turner all starting this weekend. Lucas Rumball returns to the BC Premier after many seasons away, he’ll be starting as Ravens openside flanker.
Men’s Premier
James Bay AA 21 v Westshore 26 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Martin Thornton AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park
Westshore get the +5 win, which gives me a +2 bonus in the score prediction rivalry with Sean. Westshore sit top of the standings after 3 weeks with 15 points. The Bays slide to a 1-2 record and a 5th place tie with Capilano at 7 points. There’s no Premier matches on Thanksgiving weekend but on October 18th Westshore will visit UBC and the Bays host CW.
PREGAME
Westshore are 2-0 and sit top of the standings, the Bays are 1-1.
Westshore have Kaden Duguid starting in the second row and Joe Kingham moves to #8, Elias Hancock isn’t in the roster this week. Thomas Isherwood moves to #9, an interesting start for him, Canada needs more depth at scrum-half, this might reboot his national XVs aspirations. Taylor McGuire starts at inside centre and Kyle Tremblay moves from wing to outside centre. It’s a formidable backline from 9 to 15.
The Bays have added Austin Creighton to the forwards, he’s starting at blindside flanker. Kainoa Lloyd returns to the roster on the wing. Crosby Stewart returns to the roster as reserve scrum-half.
The Bays are playing good rugby with a win over Ravens and a narrow loss to Burnaby. The addition of Austin Creighton and Kainoa Lloyd will boost their performance. Westshore have a lethal backline, one of the best in the league, the question is how do the forwards match up? The addition of Kaden Duguid is a big plus. Prediction: Westshore by +5.
Sean Ryan’s Prediction: Westshore to take the win narrowly against James Bay by 3 points.

Meraloma 26 v Burnaby Lake 39 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Saro Turner AR2: Cole Northcott
Venue: Connaught Park
Burnaby winning this by +13 according to the BCRU website or +11 (39-28) according to the Burnaby social media post, either way a strong win from the visiting team. That result puts Burnaby at 2-1 and a 2nd/3rd place tie with UBC at 13 points. The Lomas fall to 1-2, 6 points, which gives them a 7th/8th tie with UVic. On October 18th it will be Burnaby visiting Capilano and the Lomas visit the Ravens.
PREGAME
Burnaby are 1-1-0 and Lomas are 1-1. Burnaby winning at James Bay last week and Lomas winning at home against CW last week, both close matches.
Burnaby have started Ethan Turner at #10 and moved Napolioni Bolaca to #15. They’ve added another Fijian 7s flyer, Iowane Raturaciri, to the wing and Wayne Ngubane has been moved to the starting #9 role. It’s a dangerous looking backline. Cooper Johnston returns to the Burnaby roster as starting lock.
The Lomas have a new tighthead prop, Lucas Aukuso, from NZ to bolster their pack. The rest of the forward pack looks similar to last week with a couple of rotations from the bench. Luc Thomson returns from last season to start at scrum half, Charlie Greaves is moved from fullback to #10 and Joe Wilde takes the fullback role.
It should be a good match, the Lomas boosting their pack and Burnaby their outside threat. Toss up but will go with Burnaby as they haven’t lost yet. Prediction: Burnaby by +1.
Sean Ryan’s Prediction: I feel Burnaby will take the win away from against Meraloma by 7.

UBCOB Ravens 24 v Capilano 20 @ 14:30
Referee: Bradley Schwalger AR1: Trevor Honey AR2: Dad Scott Johnson
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
A close +4 win by the Ravens gives them their first win of the season, even with Carson clan on vacation. They sit 1-2 in the standings but with bonus points sit in 4th place with 8 points. Caps are also 1-2 and sit in a 5th/6th place tie with JBAA at 7 points. On October 18th, the Ravens host the Lomas and the Caps host Burnaby.
PREGAME
Capilano are 1-1 and the Ravens a surprising 0-2. Capilano lost to UBC last week but defeated Lomas in Week 1. The Ravens have lost to the Bays and Westshore.
Capilano have made no changes to the starting XV from last week, just two changes to the bench with veteran Chris Robinson able to take on either halfback role.
Potential big news for the Ravens, Lucas Rumball is pencilled in the roster at openside, apparently waiting for the paperwork to go through. We’ll update when we find out for sure. The Carson’s apparently on vacation and travelling as a pack, so only Jack carrying on the family tradition this week. Still a big addition as we haven’t seen him in the roster since last year’s championship match. Andrew Coe starting at #10, interesting to see how that goes, if we’re lucky Peter MacDonald will do a write up of the match. Ethan Berry back at inside centre, again haven’t seen him since last year’s championship match. Noah Bain moves to fullback. Jean-Claude Koorsten returns from last season and starts on the wing. Late update, Lucas Rumball is cleared to play.
Going to be difficult to predict with the Rumball factor up in the air, the Carson’s missing is going to hurt the Ravens forward effort but a couple of backs returning and Andrew Coe starting at #10. Spin the wheel on this one but will go with Ravens. Prediction: Ravens by +2.
Sean Ryan’s Prediction: Defending champs have left me down so I’ve decided that Capilano will get the win by 5.

UBC RFC 42 v University Of Victoria 33 @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Kristine Lovatt AR2: Simon Whyte
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
A +9 win for the Thunderbirds, closer than the +17 win earlier in the season. UBC win the Wightman Boot by a +26 and now sit 3-0 in the National University Qualification series. They’ll likely keep their #1 national ranking and now it’s between UVic and TWU to see who is the other BC team going to the Nationals. UBC remain tied in 2nd/3rd place in the BC Premier with Burnaby, 2 points behind Westshore. UBC will finish off their University Qualification series on Thanksgiving weekend at TWU, then they host Westshore in BC Premier on October 18th. UVic will host TWU on October 18th in what will likely be the University Qualification deciding match for BC spot #2.
Full Match Video
PREGAME
UBC are 1-1-0 in the BC Premier and UVic are 1-0. In the Wightman Boot series UBC have a +17 lead. In the National University Qualification series UBC are 2-0 and UVic are 1-1, TWU are 0-2, the top two teams advance.
The big difference for UVic since last match against UBC, is they have Cooper Coats starting at #10. Lockhart MacGregor starts at #13 and Morgan di Nardo moves to the wing. The forwards remain basically unchanged with Jaxson Jones moving from the bench to start at openside flanker. Sion Griffiths is back in the match 23 and that’s a plus for the Vikes.
UBC have gone back to the forward configuration where Relmu Wilson-Valdes plays second row and Cody Nhanala starts at #8. Liam Kinghorn returns to the starting roster at blindside flanker. Alastair Marshall returns as starting wing and James Biss returns to his usual #10 spot.
It will be interesting to see how much of a difference Cooper Coats makes as starting #10. The forward matchup is similar to the last meeting where UBC had a slight advantage. The game should be closer but still UBC go in as favourites. Prediction: UBC by +3.
Sean Ryan’s Prediction: UBC Thunderbirds to dominate against the Vikes by 10.

Men’s Exhibition
Pacific Pride 57 v Seattle 36 @ 14:30
Venue: Juan de Fuca, Colwood
It was a game played in exhibition style with lots of scoring, not so much defence. Seattle did well in the close spaces and mauls, the Pride had the advantage out wide. Seattle had the advantage in the scrum in the first half, the Pride had the advantage in the second half when the reserves came on. One area I thought the Pride needed work on was at the breakdown, Seattle poached too many balls and the Pride had too many breakdown penalties. When the ball went wide, the Pride were in their element and looked dangerous. The Pride’s next Premier match is November 1st at Westshore. They’re playing a Fraser Valley rep team in their next match on October 11th, venue TBD. The Chicago Hounds Academy team will be coming as well this fall, we’ll post details later, from memory I think it’s November 22nd.
PREGAME
The Pride have listed 27 players since it’s an exhibition, time to give everyone playing time. We’ll list the Seattle roster when it’s available, we’ve posted the Seattle Sept 27th lineup versus Boise United, a game won by Seattle 51-17.

Meraloma 41 v Castaway Wanderers 7 @ 12:45
Referee: Cole Northcott AR1: Michael Landiak AR2: John Bay
Venue: Connaught Park
The Lomas just moving up from Div 1 have announced their intentions in the Premier with a comprehensive win over CW. They’re scheduled to play the Ravens on October 18th but the status of the Ravens women’s team is still up in the air after a Week 1 cancellation. CW play next on October 25th at Westshore.
PREGAME
The Meraloma are moving up to Premier from Div 1 so we don’t have a previous roster in the archives. CW have 8 players returning from the March 15th roster last season, that was their road trip to Seattle so they were missing a few players. Again we’ll get a better idea of playing strength as the season progresses.

Someone check Lucas Rumball’s passport
Biss should have been in the national 32 camp this year. Will be interesting to see Biss vs Coats at UBC
@John Langley earlier raised this issue:
“I am told that the BCRU rules mandate that to be eligible for the playoffs Premier teams must have a Premier Reserve men’s side and a Women’s Program.”
John, I search the answer out for you below, you were right, (the wonders of AI)
Yes, you’re absolutely right — the BC Rugby Union (BCRU) has implemented new eligibility requirements for Premier League teams ahead of the 2025/26 Senior Club season. Here’s a breakdown of the key mandates:
Premier League Playoff Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Premier League playoffs, clubs must meet the following structural criteria:
• Premier Reserve Team Requirement:
Each Premier team must also field a Premier Reserve men’s side that competes in Division 1. This ensures depth and development within the club structure.
• Women’s Program Requirement:
Clubs must operate a Women’s Program, which typically means fielding a team in one of the women’s divisions. This promotes gender equity and broader participation across the sport.
@John Langley
John, If you request a AI analysis as to which clubs are compliant it is interesting. Don’t worry Cap are compliant based on the analysis
I’m sure the Ravens can afford the players to become compliant
I feel sorry for the board member who will get bullied and intimidated, gutless! The Board members who are more worried about $$$ than what is morale the right thing to do. Grow a Goddam Spine!!!!!
