from UBC

MONTREAL – In a physical, low-scoring affair, the Thunderbirds suffered their first defeat of the 2025-26 campaign in the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship semifinals.

The victors were the Guelph Gryphons, who fell behind early but tied things up by the end of the first half and nudged ahead late in the second.

To begin the match, the T-Birds were certainly in control. They didn’t Guelph touch the ball past the halfway line at all in the opening period of play.

Their repeated drives forward paid off in the 12th minute, as they turned a lineout deep into Gryphons territory into a UBC maul pushing the ball towards the goal line. Emmett Allan was the try scorer in the end, with teammate Callum Arnesen helping pull him across the final couple yards. Liam James’ kick sailed through the uprights, putting his team up 7-0 early.

Both teams had the opportunity to put points on the board on following possessions, but some key turnovers on both sides left the score the same until the very end of the half.

Trouble began for the T-Birds when the Gryphons got the ball deep into UBC territory. Then, Ben Martin was shown a yellow card to give Guelph the advantage. They made full use of it, as Liam Bowman played a perfectly placed low kick through the Thunderbirds’ defence, which Kobe Faust ran onto and dove on in the try zone.

The two teams thus entered the break tied up at 7-7, with all to play for in the second half.

Still playing a man down to begin the second period, the T-Birds worked hard to try and ensure ensure that there was no more scoring from their opponents. Demetri Patterson nearly sprang loose down the left sideline, but was dragged back by a Gryphons defender before he could truly break free.

As the clock continued to tick by with no scoring on either side, each team knew that every possible point was becoming more and more crucial. The Gryphons went for a very long penalty kick attempt with 10 minutes to go, but it fell short.

Guelph’s kicking came through in the end, however, as they scored six points on a pair of kicks in the final few minutes to push themselves ahead. The Thunderbirds were unable to make a charge forward to grab the win at the death, and the Gryphons booked their place in the championship match for the first time ever.

UBC will now play for bronze on Sunday afternoon. Their opponent will be either familiar foes UVic, or tournament hosts ETS.

The Vikes came out determined in the second half. The Vikes wasted no time as they came out firing in the second half. The Vikes cut into the Piranhas’ lead further as they scored their second try of the game. With another conversion from Oughtred, ETS’ lead was 17-14 with the Vikes within striking distance.

Piranhas awarded a penalty goal. In the 10th minute, ETS was awarded a penalty goal attempt. The ETS kicker executed and pushed the lead out to 20-14.

Dramatically, the Vikes remained relentless to regain the lead. The Vikes pushed the ball down to the brink of the Piranhas’ try line. Out of a scrum, Adam Doane grabbed the ball and used his long reach to extend his way over the try line. An ever-important conversion was executed perfectly, and the Vikes grabbed their first lead of the game.

ETS utilized a drop goal to score the go-ahead points. With the Piranhas back on the attack in the 29th minute of the second half, ETS executed a perfect drop goal to score a key three points. This goal pushed the Piranhas back out in front and sealed the game at 23-21.

UBC Roster

Match Report from UBC

MONTREAL – The T-Birds earned an emphatic opening round win at the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship, defeating the Montreal Carabins 40-0 on a chilly day at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

Emmett Allan and Stephen Webb combined to score 31 of those 40 UBC points, with the former scoring three tries and the latter notching two tries and three successful converts. T-Birds captain Relmu Wilson-Valdes was named the Player of the Match for the blue and gold.

UBC took it to Montreal early, scoring three tries in the opening 20 minutes. Aidan Sutherland got the party started, before Webb scored both of his tries while also taking the converts.

The Carabins did have some strong offensive possession in the UBC end as halftime neared, but the T-Birds’ defence held strong with some nice tackling and cutting off of passing angles.

The ‘Birds then put the match out of reach in the second half, with Allan breaking through for his first try less than five minutes in following some great work by Cody Nhanala and Webb to push to the ball forward.

The Carabins nearly got themselves on the board soon after, as they tried to capitalize on a T-Birds turnover by kicking the ball down the sideline with a Montreal winger attempting to run onto it and pick it up for a try. But the Thunderbirds recovered beautifully, with Alastair Marshall tracking back to knock the ball away from the onrushing attacker to keep the shutout going.

Allan scored his second try of the half in the 49th minute, as part of another period of sustained pressure by the T-Birds. The Courtenay, B.C. native scored once again in the final few minutes to cap his great individual – and a great team – performance. Liam James made the convert on both of the last two tries.

UBC will be taking on another team with some momentum under their wings in the semifinal round, as they face the Guelph Gryphons, who beat UBC Okanagan 59-0 in their quarterfinal.

The rematch of last year’s bronze medal game will be on Friday, with a spot in the national championship final on the line.

  1. I am sure UBC and UVIC are hoping the BC Rugby board can institute an import rule for the CUMRC! A few tubby frenchmen on gap years have absolutely housed our lads the last two championships!!

    • So nice, you said it twice! Guess we know you’re running two accounts, big fella. I am the antithesis of James Bay. As in, I am not banging my fists on the BCRU’s table demanding that all the Vancouver teams have too many imports, wah wah wah, gol dang it!
