Vancouver Sevens Invitational Teams Announced for February 20-21 Tournament at UBC
posted January 13th 2025
The BCRU have announced the U18 and U16 teams entered in the Vancouver Sevens Invitational to be hosted at UBC. The event runs alongside the World Rugby Vancouver Sevens which is hosted at BC Place. The invitational tournament takes place on Thursday and Friday, the main sevens event takes place Friday to Sunday.
There’s several interesting notes here, the teams entered in most of the age brackets are the BC regional teams, Vancouver, Valley (East and West), Island (North and South), Okanagan (TORA), Aurora (North), plus provincial/regional reps from other provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Washington State). That’s the case with the U16 Boys and Girls, and the U18 Boys. The U18 Girls have taken a different approach, the BC regions aren’t included but BC is represented by three BC teams, BC Gold, Blue and White. There’s also a Calgary based academy Pro-X in the Girls U18.
Apparently the BC Girls U18 coach Darcy Patterson preferred the three BC provincial teams to BC regional teams as a selection tool for the BC U18 team for the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s in August. BC cleaned up in 2022 winning Gold at the Canada Summer Games, so it’s hard to argue with her preferences although some U18 regional girls coaches aren’t happy with the decision. The men’s teams weren’t invited to the Canada Summer Games in 2022 but that’s changed in 2025 and there will be men’s and women’s 7s this year. So it will be interesting to compare results and selection methods, regional teams or several provincial teams?
Talking of the 2022 BC U18 team that dominated at the Canada Summer Games, how many advanced to the senior national team? Adia Pye was on the Canada team at the Dubai and Cape Town 7s this year, she’s the only one that I know of although several have gone on to represent at the senior provincial and university level and several at the Canada U20 level in XVs.

BC Rugby is excited to announce the Vancouver Sevens Invitational (VSI) will return on February 20-21, 2025 ahead of the 2025 HSBC SVNS Vancouver.
In partnership with Sport Hosting Vancouver, the 2025 VSI will once again take place at UBC’s Gerald McGavin Centre providing a complete Rugby Sevens experience for all participants, combining thrilling matches with the opportunity to witness world-class international competition at Vancouver’s BC Place.
The 2025 VSI will see 35 teams compete across U16 Boys, U16 Girls, U18 Boys and U18 Girls Divisions, welcoming regional and provincial sides from across Canada and the USA. Taking place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation in the week leading up to the HSBC SVNS Vancouver, the VSI aims to provide competition to motivate, challenge and inspire young athletes, Coaches and Officials, and bring together elite youth 7s players from across all regions of BC.
The two-day tournament will help foster the growth of competitive 7s Rugby throughout BC while also serving to prepare athletes for 2025 Provincial Regional Competitions and national competitions such as the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The 2025 VSI event will feature a mixture of BC regional teams and invited regional programs in the U16 Boys an U16 Girls Divisions, while the U18 Boys Division will see BC regions face invited provincial representative programs from Alberta.
The U18 Girls Division will see three BC Provincial squads battle it out against other Canadian provincial programs and invited representative sides, as part of the preparation and selection process for the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St John’s, Newfoundland, later this year.
