BC Rugby Weekend of November 1st 2025

BC Premier Week 6 Results: Vikes Fall to Burnaby, Ravens Topple Bays, Caps Top Lomas, UBC Dominate CW, Pride Crash at Westshore; Women’s Premier Burnaby Upset by Lomas, CW Defeat UBC, Abby Outscored at Westshore

It’s Week 6 in the 19 Week league, so about 1/3 through. Each team plays a home and away with the other 8 teams plus one home game against the Pride for 17 games in total per team, except the Pride. There’s no Premier rugby on Remembrance Day weekend, play resumes November 15th.

Burnaby Lake 38 v University Of Victoria 29 @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Lance Davison AR2: Michael Landiak
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club

A Burnaby win by +9, we predicted a +12 win, so close. Sean picked UVic +3, c’mon Sean, you can do better 😉

There’s no rugby on Remembrance Day weekend but on Nov 15th it will be Burnaby visiting CW and UVic will be at the University Nationals. Burnaby go into the Remembrance Day break in 5th place with a point per match ratio of 3. UVic are in 8th place with a PPM of 1.6.

PREGAME

Burnaby at 2-1-2 sit in 6th place, UVic at 1-3 sit in a 7th place. Like UBC this will be the Vikes last Premier match before the university championships.

UVic missing a number of key players, 3 backline starters to the national team tour to Europe, Coats, di Nardo, McIndoe. Also missing Michael Oughtred who is their starting #10 when Cooper Coats isn’t available, Brendan Kim the big second row, Phoenix Moller their starting tighthead. It may be a case of resting key players if they’re carrying a slight niggle and they need everyone healthy going into the university nationals. It’s also a chance to look at some 2nd team players prior to the nationals.

Burnaby look fully loaded in the backline, 9 to 15 look top drawer. They’re missing tighthead prop Bryce Worden to the national team tour. They also have a few TWU players moving over now that TWU’s national university run is over, Josh Halladay, Matt Willemse and Fynn Murphy look to make an impact off the bench.

Burnaby clear favourites here and the point differential may go in to the double digits. Prediction: Burnaby by +12.

Sean’s Prediction: UVic to take the W over Burnaby by 3. Burnaby might have home advantage but UVic will be getting their team ready for the CUMRC and will be figuring out their selection which every player will be eager to be on the starting line up. UVic by +3.

James Bay AA 8 v UBCOB Ravens 38 @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus (Pending) AR1: Martin Thornton AR2: Chris Horsley
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park

A +30 win by the Ravens exceeding predictions. The Ravens are on a roll winning 4 in a row after losing their first 2. The Ravens in 3rd spot with a PPM of 3.83 and the Bays drop to 6th place at 2.83 PPM. Next match for the Bays will be at the Lomas, the Ravens will host the Pride.

PREGAME

Both teams at 3-2 and looking to climb into 2nd place if other results go their way. The Bays defeated the Lomas last week and the Ravens took down UVic.

The Bays missing some top forwards to the national team tour,  props Sam Miller and Kyle Steeves and second row Callum Botchar. Also missing this week is big centre Mike Nieuwenhuysen.

The Ravens without a single Carson in the roster, when was the last time that happened? Owain Ruttan is back, a boost for the Ravens. Missing are Andrew Coe, Owen Kokan, Jake Ikeda, Hamish Janes, Ethan Berry from last week.

Both teams missing players, the Bays looking strong at home but the Ravens defending champions have won 3 in a row after losing their first two. Prediction: Ravens by +7.

Sean’s Prediction: I’m nervous but I’m going with Ravens to win against JBAA by 5. They have seemed to found their rhythm and will get their revenge against James Bay AA. Ravens by +5.

Meraloma 7 v Capilano 33 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Bradley Schwalger AR2: Phil Webster
Venue: Connaught Park

A big +26 win for the Caps exceeding predictions, although Sean was on the right track. Caps are in 4th with a 3.66 PPM and the Lomas drop to 8th at 1.17 PPM and a 1-5 record. The Lomas host the Bays next while the Caps visit Westshore.

PREGAME

Lomas at 1-4 and Caps at 3-2, it’s coming up to the 1/3 of the season mark so the Lomas will need the win to stay within distance of a top 6 place and a ticket to the playoffs. Lomas lost to the Bays last week, Caps defeated CW.

Caps missing Izzak Kelly to the national tour but they have Logan Weidner back, we haven’t seen him in Caps gold since his time in MLR. That’s a big plus for them at #8.

The Lomas rotate their roster with Craig Trimble at second row the only new player to be added to the starting XV from last week.

Always a close rivalry between these teams, the Lomas at home but the Caps playing to form right now, should be a close one. Prediction: Caps by +3.

Sean’s Prediction: Capilano to get double digit win over Meraloma by 12. Capilano won in the early fixture between these 2 sides and I believe they will be wanting to widen the gap. Meraloma has a lot of spirit but will need some magic to get the W in my view. Capilano by +12.

UBC RFC 69 v Castaway Wanderers 10 @ 14:30
Referee: Visiting Referee 1 (Pending) AR1: Visiting Referee 2 (Pending) AR2: Visiting Referee 2 (Pending)
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre

A massive +59 win for UBC while resting many of their first string. This bodes well for them going into the university championships. CW drop to last place at 0-5 and a PPM of 0.8. UBC go to the university nationals next while CW will host Burnaby.

PREGAME

UBC top of the table and only undefeated team, they have their university nationals coming up and this will be their last Premier match before that event. CW haven’t been able to get a win in their 4 matches but they do have 4 bonus points in the losses.

CW missing a few players, Gradyn Bowd most notably, also Shane Rikley-Krindle and Angus Boyd-Porter from the backline. Ayo Ogunlabe returns to the second row and Gavin Kratz returns as reserve prop.

UBC resting a few starters with the CUMRC on the horizon, Relmu Wilson-Valdes, Joe McNulty, Callum Arnesen, Cody Nhanala, Stephen Webb, Liam James all missing from the roster. The McMullin brothers not present, Takoda on tour with the national team and Talon who has missed a couple of games, hopefully he’s good to go for the nationals.

It’s not UBC’s strongest roster but it may be a last chance for some players to make an impression and get on the roster going to Montreal. UBC haven’t lost yet, at home, go in as favourites. Prediction: UBC by +9.

Sean’s Prediction: UBC Thunderbirds by 18 over Castaway Wanderers. Thunderbirds are the team to beat at the moment and I expect them to pull out all the guns as they prep for the CUMRC in the next few weeks. UBC by +18.

Westshore 34 v Pacific Pride 14 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: David Hale AR2: Andrew Owen
Venue: Juan De Fuca

This is the game we attended. It was a close 10-7 lead for Westshore at the half. Pride were short props and it showed in the second half as the Westshore scrum had ascendancy. The Pride were ahead at the 50 minute mark but it was all Westshore in the last 30.  Impressing for the Pride was scrum half Jesse Kilgour and for Westshore Rhys James and Thomas Isherwood. Westshore retains 2nd place with a 4.0 PPM and a 4-1 record. The Pride drop to 0-2 and 9th place. We’ll post match photos to our social media channels.

PREGAME

Both teams had a bye last week and played an abbreviated exhibition match narrowly won by Westshore. Westshore were pummelled by UBC in their last Premier match, 45-0. Pride won their last match, an exhibition against Seattle, 57-36.

Westshore have Thomas Isherwood back, a big plus for them. They have a high octane backline although it failed to ignite against UBC in their last match.

The Pride seem short in the prop department as they have TBC for #17 and #18 and they’re starting TWU prop Ethan Jurgeneit at tighthead. We may see young Simroy John from Shawnigan in one of those spots and that would be a brother v brother contest with Simeon at tighthead for Westshore. The Pride do have a new South African #8, Dewet Van Rooyen, that should be interesting to watch. Also Jesse Kilgour is back at #9, perhaps in the running for one of the 7s spots going to Trinidad later this month.

It’s hard to understand how Westshore got blanked last match with the firepower they have in the backline. Will Isherwood be the missing link? How will Pride be affected in their search for front row reserves, the return of Kilgour and the potential of a new South African #8 add to the unknowns. Going for the home team on this one. Prediction: Westshore by +5.

Sean’s Prediction: Westshore to get the win over Pacific Pride by 7. Unsure how this game will unfold especially being PP second game of the season while Westshore have 3 wins after 4 games. I think the more games you play as a team the better your team will be. I will be surprised if Westshore loses. Westshore by +7.

Women’s Premier

The Women’s Premier predictions will be updated when we have all the rosters, missing at the time of writing Thunderbirds.

Meraloma 24 v Burnaby Lake 19 @ 12:45
Referee: Phil Webster AR1: John Cameron AR2: Lauren Hancock
Venue: Connaught Park (note venue changed to Burnaby Lake)

The Lomas are the real deal taking down Burnaby Lake, coming up from Div 1 they prove they’re one of the contenders this Premier season. The Lomas visit CW next while Burnaby are scheduled to host the Ravens if they can get their team sorted. The Lomas are undefeated at 2-0 while Burnaby drops to 2-1.

PREGAME

This is a tough one to call, Burnaby have won both their games, the Lomas have only played one game and won that over CW in convincing fashion. The Lomas are a good Div 1 team coming up to Premier, how good is the question and this match should answer that. If Lomas win this one then they’re serious contenders, but based on Burnaby taking down defending champions Thunderbirds last week, they’ll go in as favourites. Prediction: Burnaby by +5.

PREGAME

Westshore won the first match in Abby by +20, at home they’ll go in as favourites. They’re missing Keyara Wardley in the centres but still have national team player Breanne Nicholas running the backline from #10. Prediction: Westshore by +14.
